Trials Qualifier and Texas UIL 5A State Champion Jed Jones Commits to Yale

Jed Jones from Fairview, Texas has committed to swim for Yale University in the class of 2024 with future Bulldogs Adam Zapatka, Ben Phifer, Conner Kang, Marcus Hodgson, and Nathan Borges. Jones is a senior at Lovejoy High School and the two-time Texas UIL 5A state champion in the 200 IM. At the 2020 5A state meet, Jones won by 1.6 seconds to break the meet record with 1:48.62. He was runner-up in the 500 free (4:29.69) and anchored the 11th-place 400 free relay (45.65). The previous year he won the 200 IM by .06 with 1:49.89, took 3rd in the 500 (4:34.36), and anchored the 10th-place 200 free relay (21.37).

Jones swims for Metroplex Aquatics and is a 2020 Olympic Trials qualifier in the 400 IM, a Winter U.S. Open qualifier in the 200 IM. He has Summer Juniors cuts in the 200 free and 200 back and a Winter Juniors cut in the 100 free and 500 free. Jones competed in the 200 free, 200 back, 200 fly, and 400 IM at Winter Juniors West in December and placed 5th in the 400 IM. He had an outstanding meet at College Station Sectionals in March, finaling in the 100 back (25th), 200 back (18th), 200 IM (9th), and 400 IM (2nd). Given that prelims were in SCY and finals were in LCM, Jones picked up lifetime bests in the SCY 200 free, LCM 100/200 free, LCM 100/200 back, SCY 200 fly, and LCM 400 IM. The latter, a 4:25.28, cleared the Trials standard by 0.71.

Jones’s best times would have qualified him for the A final of the 400 IM (with sophomore Liam Bogart), the B final of the 200 IM and the C finals of the 200/500 free, 200 back, and 200 fly at 2020 Ivy League Men’s Championships.
