Torri Huske Talks Mixed Medley Relay, 100 Fly, and Learning Experiences From 2023 Worlds

In the SwimSwam Podcast dive deeper into the sport you love with insider conversations about swimming. Hosted by Coleman HodgesGarrett McCaffrey, and Gold Medal Mel Stewart, SwimSwam welcomes both the biggest names in swimming that you already know, and rising stars that you need to get to know, as we break down the past, present, and future of aquatic sports.

I tried my hands at a SwimSwam podcast for the first time and talked with American Record holder Torri Huske about her preparations, performances, and post-meet reflections from the 2023 World Championships. Although she wasn’t happy with the way she swam at Worlds, she doesn’t believe that one bad meet defines who she is as a swimmer (a sentiment that was also echoed by her coach, Greg Meehan) and is even more motivated headed into the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. She believes that Worlds is a learning experience for her, and looks forward to her upcoming Olympic redshirt year.

As I said to her on camera, I really appreciate Huske’s willingness to be interviewed about performances that she wasn’t satisfied with—she gave really good insight about a difficult subject.

I’ve done quite a few interviews before, but this was my first time capturing one live on video. Talking on camera isn’t my strong suit so this was a learning experience, but one that I’m glad I had!

I’m a Noah fan, but you use your good 15 minutes of fame to go out on that limb. Bron, Durant, Luka, Curry, Greek Freak, etc are all global superstars sitting on 9-10 figure fortunes with the NBA being huge throughout the world. I guess he wanted a hot take while he had some spotlight until next August

No, he’s right. It’s completely silly to call themselves world champions. Do the winners of The Champions League call themselves World Champions?

So they change the name to National champions, what does that do for Noah or Track and Field? It will change nothing.

No, they call it what it is, NBA Champions.

Yanyan- great interview. You asked some insightful questions and carried yourself well.

Keep it up

I get the encouragement but let’s be real, there’s a lot if upside to be had. She just kept to her list of questions and had no back and forth, very awkward. There were plenty of times she could have had follow ups to Torres responses, but she went right back to her list of “I’m curious” questions. It should sound like a conservation, not an exam.

That was the feedback that I received from most of the YouTube comments as well, and also what I realized after I finished the interview. As soon as I pressed the stop button I thought of just about every instance where I could have asked a follow-up when I didn’t. As I said before, talking live on camera was never my strong suit and this is my first time doing a podcast interview. I’m much better with written interviews where there’s no pressure of being filmed for an audience, but I gave Torri’s representatives the options of a podcast or a long-form story and Torri preferred the former. I wanted to do what she felt most comfortable with so I… Read more »

Everyone starts somewhere and it is a lot harder than it looks. I hope you keep doing these.😊

And I forgot add, she did a great job on her first podcast and given her ability to learn and improve (look at the way her writing has taken off), i look forward to her future podcasts and seeing her grow in this aspect of journalism.

Great job for your first one and being so open with feedback. I’d also argue that Torri had some awkwardly short/vague answers that may have thrown you off. That being said, Torri herself has come a long way in improving her interview responses.

I imagine it is much harder than it looks. Good to see you take on the feedback as a chance to learn. Looking forward to the next one.

The world doesn’t need a second Coleman, or a second Mel. The world needs the first Yanyan Li.

Sorry to be random but some 14 year old Aussie girl just went a 1:08.98 in 100m Breaststroke LC

Ruta Meilutitties was much faster at that age. Who cares?

It is really random to post on this article but considering Australia just split a 1:07 in the medley relay it seems like a 14 year old going 1:08 is something that a lot of people will care about

While we’re already on a random aside: Meg Harris left Adelaide/Marion and looks like she moved back to Brisbane. I wonder if she’ll go back to SPW?

Hey Yanyan

I listen to these on the apple podcast app. The version that got uploaded there is only the first 5 minutes. Is the full version going to be available?

Thanks!

Hey! I just sent this comment to Emmie, the person who posts on social media/edits and uploads our podcasts. It seems to be only four minutes on Spotify as well. She’ll reupload when she gets the chance. Thanks for letting us know!

I’m not in charge of what goes on the Instagram, but I do find it really funny that we uploaded two clips of that specific podcast before we released the entire thing.

Intelligent, articulate, and mature. She has a great perspective. Easy to root for.

She is going to be back in a big way this year.

Undoubtedly one of the best swimmers on the USA team, she was the best swimmer last year (2022) after ledecky, I think that after katie, regan smith and Douglass, torri is the fourth swimmer with the most chances to be one of the most successful on next year (Olympic champion)
GO TORRI!! In addition to an important factor to open the 4×100 free.
