After swimming the fastest time of the 100 free prelims at the Arena Pro Swim Series at Santa Clara, California Aquatics’ Nathan Adrian has scratched himself from racing again in finals.
Adrian, who swam a 49.36 in prelims to take the top time of the morning, was out faster than the next-best competitor (23.24) by five tenths. The 2nd-fastest swimmer at the turn, Russian Vlad Morozov, was out in 23.74, and now takes over as the top seed in this race going into finals.
Adrian’s scratch also moves Geoff Cheah (Hong Kong) and Dylan Carter (Trojan Swim Club) out of a 9th place tie that would have required them to compete in a swim-off. Now, both Cheah and Carter will race in the 100 free A final tonight without needing a swim-off.
After winning the 50 free yesterday (21.97) with a time that pushed him up to #7 in world rankings, as well as experiencing a huge drop of .65 from prelims, all eyes were on Adrian as he looked to crack the world top 25 in the 100.
Unofficially, Adrian was the only A-finalist in the men’s 100 free to scratch. Look for a tight race tonight, as the top seed and the 9th seed are separated by less than five tenths.
Hopefully it’s not an undisclosed injury or something that was caused after the prelims swim.
Hopefully.
Yes cut Adrian some slack. He probably had dinner scheduled with his family and friends. He has swam numerous APS races so at this point in his career one more race won’t be a big deal. Even if he went mid 48 this evening whaf would it matter in the grand scheme of things. Btw no one is going to swim 47 mid in Kazan. Without Magnusson injured Mcevoy is easily the man to beat.
LOL. You think that Morozov isn’t going to throw down a time within a few tenths of his 47.65? At home? Ok, Adrian was 48 flat numerous times last season, and then he kicked in to throw down at Pan Pacs. Now he hasn’t rested for any Pro Swims, and his training has obviously been a lot more rigorous for him to not break 49 in any of those meets this year. He is going to taper to a 48 low in the worst case possible. Then you have the other guys, including Verschuren in the 100. He’s going to be at least a 47.9. If you ask me? Adrian, Morozov, and McEvoy are ALL going to be within 47.4… Read more »
Adrian deserves the benefit of the doubt. I am sure he has a damn good reason for scratching
Bobo Gigi
I was at a US Grand Prix at the old Pheonix Swim Club in the late 90s. 8 Canadians in the 200 IM final.
I guess I will give Phelps a bit of slack since racing a B final is of less benefit after messing up his breakout this a.m., I’m guessing he thinks A final of the 2Back will be more fun and of greater training benefit. But for Adrian, unless he’s sick/injured (hopefully not) or had a wedding/funeral/graduation to attend (hopefully so), I don’t get it. Along with Morozov who he will have to beat to make the podium, there are 4 other guys who’ve gone 48 in the final, who will be among his competition in Kazan. That would seem like a good tradeoff for whatever workout his coach has planned for the morning. Hope everything’s OK and great job in… Read more »
Apparently you don’t know that it’s Father’s Day either.
Technically it is father’s day for all of the swimmers, so… I am not certain that serves as much of an excuse. I do think this is a challenge to bringing new fans to the sport. Imagine if Jordan Spieth “ducked out” of the US Open, or Lebron James decided he wanted to grab dinner out during half-time.
Of course, the meet organizers themselves could have aimed for a different weekend.
What is it with you and Father’s Day?
It probably has to do with the fact that today is Father’s Day. A swim meet on Father’s Day is not good.
Wow looks like there’s another key scratch.
Siobhan Haughey (HK) isn’t listed in the PM heat sheets for the 100 free (focusing on the 200 IM?).
This would bump Missy up to the A final then!
Maybe he had something else to do. Shopping? Dinner with friends? Disappoint the large number of swimming fans who were there to see the 2012 Olympic champion in the 100 meter freestyle?
Dinner with his father, maybe?? It is father’s day you know…
Did others scratch for Father’s Day?
