Tokyo Proposes 8 New Sports For 2020 Olympic Games

In December, The International Olympic Committee approved new reforms known as “Olympic Agenda 2020,” allowing Olympic host cities to propose that or more events be included into the games. Previously, there was a 28 sport cap on the Games, which limited the number of sports. The new “events-based” system allows for host cities to add new sports as long as they try to stay closer to 10,500 athletes and 310 medal events.

Baseball and Softball are two of the sports that could be returning to the Olympic Games, along with several other sports that could be included for the very first time. In August, the governing bodies of Baseball, Softball, Squash, Karate, Surfing, Bowling, Roller Sports, Sport Climbing, and Wushu will make presentations in Tokyo. Organizers will then make recommendations to the IOC about which sports they want added to the Games in 2020.

The sports that applied but were not selected to present in front of the organizing committee include air sports, american football, bowls, bridge, chess, dance sport, floorball, flying disc, korfball, netball, orienteering, polo, racquetball, sumo, tug of war, underwater sports, waterski, and wakeboard.

The International Olympic Committee will make it’s final selection about which sports will be included in the 2020 Olympics in August of 2016.

Tug of war would be awesome. They should do it exhibition style at the end of the games and cross-populate the teams with athletes from all the sports, or pit sports against each other. That would be fun.
