Although the majority of the top NCAA performers every season come out of the Power Five conferences—ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and Pac-12—there’s always a handful of swimmers from mid-major programs that make an impact on the national level.
After some of the impressive performances we saw this past season, from names such as Nicole Maier, Maddy Gatrall, Brian Benzing and Ruard Van Renen, we figured it was time to take a look back and rank the top-10 swimmers from mid-major programs in each event, all-time.
Note that due to a lack of reliable data, the rankings are potentially missing times from the early 2000s and earlier, so if there are certain swims you notice are missing, please let us know in the comments below.
Some notes on the data:
- The fastest time in 10 of the 26 total events (combining men and women) came over the last two seasons, with six top times being produced in 2021-22 to mark the highest among any campaign. The second-highest was 2018-19 with five #1 times, three of them coming from Harvard’s Dean Farris.
- Farris’ time in the men’s 200 free (1:29.15) marks the NCAA Record currently held by a mid-major swimmer.
- Swimmers that became the fastest midi-major this past season: Noah Millard, Brian Benzing, Raunak Khosla and Maddy Gatrall.
- Two of the fastest times came during the 2008-09 campaign amidst the super-suit era, with Yale’s Alex Righi in the men’s 50 free and Princeton’s Alicia Aemisegger in the women’s 400 IM.
- Righi was the NCAA runner-up in both the 50 and 100 free in 2008, and then in 2009, he swam his mid-major best 18.82 50 free to qualify first out of the prelims before placing fifth in the ultra-competitive final that was won by Nathan Adrian (18.71).
- Aemisegger placed fourth in the 400 IM at Women’s NCAAs in 2009 (4:02.47) and was also third in the 1650 free in a time of 15:50.60 which ranks her third among mid-majors historically.
- One of the most memorable swims in NCAA history tops the men’s 1650 free rankings, as Penn’s Chris Swanson won the 2016 national title in a time of 14:31.54 after erasing a 2.67-second deficit with 50 yards to go, splitting 24.38 to run down South Carolina’s Akaram Mahmoud.
- 51 of the 260 swims (19.6%) to make it in the top 10 were produced this past season.
- 14 of the 26 top times come from the Ivy League, with Harvard and Penn both having four.
- The long-reigning Summit League champions, Denver also has four #1 times to tie for the most among any program.
- A total of 12 programs had at least one #1 time in any given event: Harvard, Penn, Denver (4), Princeton, Yale (3), San Diego State, SMU, Akron, Milwaukee, UMBC and Navy (1).
- Several notable names on the list went on to transfer to Power Five programs later in their NCAA career, including Kira Toussaint, Elise Haan, Anika Apostalon and Bailey Andison for the women and Fabian Schwingenschlogl for the men.
- Two others in the rankings who went on to have successful international careers but never transferred are Katie Meili (Columbia) and Emily Escobedo (UMBC).

Man, Denver has really collapsed the past few years.
EMU Hansen 1:39.87 200 Back
He’s there
I think it was brought up elsewhere in the comments but it would be interesting to throw D2, D3, and NAIA into the mix. Andrew Wilson was 50.9 and 1:50.8 to be #1, 2 respectively on those lists. New D1 Swimmer Tanner Fillion went 45.7 100 back this year too. Also throw in Deon Dressens, Matt Josa, Murius Kusch from Queens when they were D2. Kendra Stern’s 1:44.82 from Amherst just outside the top 10 for Women’s 200 free. I know there’s a bunch of names I’m missing too but just shows you can still be a baller outside of D1
Logan todhunter and Hannah Saiz’s 200fly times would make the list (both d3, and done in like 2013!)
I like the idea of that, but some rules are different ex. age of athletes.
Logan Kelly from IUPUI 100 Breast from this past season should be on there
51.94, so not quite
Thanks for shining the light on the quality of swimming in mid-majors! Shout out to my daughter Christiana!
Love the crowd support!
Now lets get our favorite relay teams out there too!
