Irish swimmer Daniel Wiffen broke the World Record in the 800 short course meters freestyle on Sunday to close the 2023 European Short Course Championship.
All World Records create lots of new histories, but this one checked a number of big boxes. It was the first World Record set by an Irish swimmer.
The World Record that it broke, Grant Hackett’s, was set on July 20, 2008, and at 5,621 days, was the oldest FINA/World Aquatics World Record still on the books.
So that begs the question – what is the new oldest World Record?
That honor now belongs to the US Men’s 400 Free Relay World Record of 3:08.24, which was set on August 11, 2008. That record, the famous “Jason Lezak anchor” relay, is 5,599 days old. Besides Lezak, that relay included Michael Phelps, Garrett Weber-Gale, and Cullen Jones.
That relay averaged 47.06s, and the French team that was beat is the second-fastest relay in history. The best result since that race is a 3:08.97 done by the Americans at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (in 2021), where Caeleb Dressel, Blake Pieroni, Bowen Becker, and Zach Apple won gold. Even with a wild 46.69 anchor from Apple and a 47.26 leadoff from Dressel, they were still off the World Record about two-tenths per second.
This is the second time this year that the “oldest World Record on the books” has been broken ,though the last one was a bit different. At the World Championships in July, French swimmer Leon Marchand broke Michael Phelps’ 400 IM World Record, knocking over a second off a record that Phelps held for 7,642 days. His most recent WR performance in that swim, though, was about a month younger than Hackett’s
Other Oldest World Records:
- The oldest individual World Record is Paul Biedermann’s LCM 400 free time of 3:40.07, done on July 26, 2009 (5,250 days). Next on that list is his LCM 200 free done two days later (5,248 days).
- The oldest women’s World Record is Liu Zige’s 2:01.81 in the 200 meter fly from October 21, 2009 (5,163 days).
- Paul Biedermann also has the oldest individual Short Course Meters Record on the books. On November 15, 2009, he swam 1:39.37 in the 200 free (5,138 days). The oldest Short Course Meters Record of any kind is the men’s 200 free relay, which was set by France on December 14, 2008 (5,474 days).
- The oldest women’s short course record is Therese Alshammar’s 24.38 in the 50 fly, done on November 22, 2009 (5,131) – a record that somehow survived even when Sarah Sjostrom‘s long course record of 24.43 is only .05 seconds behind.
- The oldest women’s relay record on the list is from July 28, 2019 – the women’s 400 long course meter medley relay World Record is just 1,596 days old. That was set by Americans Regan Smith, Lily King, Kelsi Dahlia, and Simone Manuel.

Well deserved
“Same List, but with Fewer Columns” has me dead😂
PED-fueled Irish swimmer Michelle Smith de Bruijn couldn’t even break WR lol.
Weren’t those records held by doped East Germans?
IIRC, only the 400 freestyle (Janet Evans, USA) was considered genuine, given the 400IM was held by Petra Schneider of East Germany, and the 200IM by Lin Li of China.
egerzegi, evans (400 im) and summer sanders (200 im) where faster than michelle smith anyway
Yes, indeed.
Rather amusing (?) that she ended up as a lawyer.
12 super-suited’s world records to go!!!
I hope all that 12 records will be broken in my lifetime.
Amen!
Men’s 200 back will not be broken in your lifetime unless Kos can somehow find 2+ seconds. Junior 200 backstrokers (US + international) don’t exactly look promising either and he is the only one with an even slight chance.
Depending on OC’s age, “in my lifetime” could potentially mean 50+ years, a time frame in which it is statistically likely that Piersol’s WR will be neared or broken.
Kos’s improvement curve is rather steep for a 20 year old, he basically drops major time at every rested meet (Worlds or the Fall Invite being the most prominent of these). He was decently fast at the US Open after an illness the previous week, and right after an altitude meet and an obviously rested fall invite. That being said, what I find more likely is that he will break Lochte’s textile WR, which is about 1.2 seconds faster than Kos’s best. Piersol’s WR is likely too fast for him.
Wow! France’s 4 × 50 m freestyle relay record is disgustingly fast, and no one has come close to it.
It isn’t the “official” world record because it was never ratified by World Aquatics. But your point stands, it is disgsustingly fast and only the Americans’ time (the current WR) has come anywhere close to it.
Thanks for the explanation. I wondered why the U.S. Swim has the WR designation.
“close”, it still is more than one second slower
Two sub 20 splits (I’m not sure what the fastest textile one’s are):
Amaury Leveaux (19.93)
Frédérick Bousquet (19.87)
Plus a 20.64 lead off from Alain Bernard at a time when the world record was 20.48
Nasty. Just nasty. That’s not coming down for awhile
I believe Caeleb has the fastest textile split with a 20.08 from 2018 SC worlds
Does anyone know where an unedited version of the relay might exist? One where we can actually watch all 4 legs of the race uninterrupted? I was looking for it on YouTube this summer and it seems to be the only race from the 08 Olympics where there’s no original version. It’s incredibly frustrating to see all these fluffed up versions (like the one linked in this article) without being able to find an original.

To go down this needs three guys with a 47.5 flat start and one 47 flat, that doesn’t feel a million miles away, I’d make it odds on it will be broken by or at LA.
Longest standing will presumably be women’s 200 fly LCM or men’s 800 free LCM, perhaps the men’s 4×50 free relay SCM.
Summer has shot at 2Fly.
the 800 will go before the 200 fly. martens was closer to the 800 wr (compared to the 200 fly textile best) when he was 5th at worlds. the 200 fly also has a much shallower field with only regan and summer being sub 2:05. the 200 back will outlast both though
And also Zhang Yufei
zhang hasn’t come within 1.5 seconds of her pb in the last 2 years
Currently? No shot. I know she’s only 17, but she’s more than 2 whole seconds away from that record.
I love Summer as much as anyone else, but I would be shocked if she ever break 200 fly WR
Duncan Scott 46.14 clears the supersuit merchant Lezak’s split
Whose draft do you prefer, Bernard or Adrian?
hah, scott drafted off a cal swimmer while lezak didn’t
Lezak split 46.06, so, no? Also think math is wrong on the Phelps record. That 7000 days is how long Phelps had the record, not how old his fastest time from 2008 Olympics was. That would have been 5000 something days.
i’m all for drafting, but the 46.06 was possible because of the suit. Don’t lie to yourself
I’m not saying it wasn’t because of the suits. I’m not lying to myself. But they were legal at the time so don’t lie to yourself! It’s still the fastest split ever. And agree with others the split is secondary to running the Frenchman down.
Supersuited times deserve a massive asterisk. Saying they should be viewed and compared to textile times just because they were legal at the time is pretty ignorant to how much of a difference they made.
There’s a bigger gap between supersuits and textiles and textiles and briefs (normal swim suits) and the time discrepancies support this. There’s a reason why on every article people want to see the supersuited records go down
Wanting to act like a whole period of the sport didn’t happen seems to be pretty ignorant. You feel free to live in your fantasy timeline where none of these swims ever happened. But don’t get triggered if someone checks you when you say something like, “the fastest split ever in history in the 100 meter freestyle is 46.14 by Duncan Scott.” Because it’s as wrong as people who want to say “France has the World Record in the SCM 4×50 Freestyle Relay.”
And no, I’m not someone who is advocating “bring back the suits.” I’m someone who is advocating “let’s keep moving forward and not keep re-litigating the past.”
Not sure where you are getting the notion that I want to pretend like a whole period of the sport didn’t happen. I’m just pointing out the massive discrepancies between supersuit and textile times, which isn’t a hot take.
I don’t think Lezak has broken 48 off a flat start without a suit lol. The fastest time I’m seeing is actually 48.6
Suit times should be recognized, but with an asterisk
You agree that Duncan Scott’s time should also be recognised?
The time Jason Lezak swam is almost second to what he accomplished. Swimming down one of the best in the world to pull off an upset will be remembered long after people forget a specific time he swam.
I’ve always argued that times only matter to swimmers and coaches, Gold medals are where you build a fan base.
That last sentence is so true. One of the swimmers from my country unexpectedly won a bronze medal yesterday at SC Euros. The papers reported on it of course and the comments in the comment section were mostly congratulatory… aside from the people who actually know about swimming. Their comments were all about how it’s so sad that this success isn’t translated into LCM and how half of Europe wasn’t even there and that their time was just average anyway.
And I get it… but at the end of the day, 99% of the people reading the article don’t understand the circumstances and details anyway. They read “European medalist” and that’s what’s on the swimmer’s CV now. And really,… Read more »
Let’s be serious, everyone who comments on this site will remember the number 46.06 forever, even when someone eventually goes faster 😆
Not me. I remember Duncan’s split though.
