Texas A&M Nominees For McWhorter Post-Graduate Scholarships Announced

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (April 26, 2016) –  Antoine Marc of the Texas A&M swimming team and Jennifer Madu of the Aggie track & field team have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by Texas A&M University.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league’s top male and female scholar-athletes.

The Southeastern Conference will name the 2016 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on April 28.

Highlights of Texas A&M’s nominees include:

Antoine Marc, Swimming, Texas A&M

  • 7-time Texas A&M Athletics Honor Roll
  • 3-time SEC Academic Honor Roll
  • Member 2016 SEC Community Service team
  • Member Phi Eta Sigma freshman honor society
  • Enrolled in the University Honors Program
  • 2014 Dean’s honor Roll
  • 2013 Distinguished Student for the College of Science
  • Executive Chair member in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
  • Member Undergraduate Leadership Scholar Capstone Project
  • Research Experience includes modeling Lyme Disease in ticks in order to develop preventative measures to stop an outbreak;  analyzing an Immunological model for the cause of bistability using subnetworks;  preparing microscope slides for use in research
  • 2015-16 team leader in the 200 freestyle and also ranked in the top five on the team in the 100 free and the 200 IM
  • Swam legs on the Aggies’ top 400 free relay and the 400 medley relay.
  • Ranks on the Aggies’ all-time top 10 list in the 200 free, 200 IM and the 400 IM
  • Will attend medical school upon graduation

Jennifer Madu, Track and Field, Texas A&M

  • Three-time SEC All-Academic Honor Roll (2013-2015)
  • Three-time Texas A&M AD Honor Roll (2013-15)
  • Currently has compiled a 3.83 overall GPA (4.0 scale)
  • Member of Student Athlete Advisory Committee (2012-2016)
  • Community service projects with Aggie Athletes Involved, Aggies CAN and Twin City Missions
  • Volunteered at Metromed Nursing Institute from 2012 to present
  • Central Texas Sports Medicine Orthopedic Surgeon Shadowing from November 2015 to present
  • Seven-time NCAA All-American, includes five individual honors and two with 4×100 relay
  • Member of NCAA Champion 4×100 relay team (2014)
  • Member of SEC champion 4×100 relay team (2013, 2014)
  • SEC Freshman Runner of the Year (2013)
  • SEC All-Freshman team in 60 and 200 meters (2013)
  • Ranks among top 10 on Texas A&M indoor all-time list in 60 meters and long jump
  • Ranks among top 10 on Texas A&M outdoor all-time list in 100m, 4×100 relay, long jump, and triple jump
  • Majoring in Kinesiology with a minor in Psychology

Each year, the SEC, in conjunction with AT&T, an SEC official sponsor, provides the league’s male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $15,000 post-graduate scholarship.  The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $7,500 post-graduate scholarship.

The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are honored at the SEC Spring Meetings in Sandestin, Fla., in early June.

Last year’s McWhorter Award recipients were Nathanael Franks of the Arkansas track & field team and Maddie Locus of the Georgia swim team.
