Texas A&M sophomore Shaine Casas entered the all-time top 10 in the 200 yard IM, swimming a 1:40.16 on Thursday at the 2019 Art Adamson Invitational. That swim ranks him exactly 10th all-time in the event among swimmers of any age.
Casas is still a teenager until Christmas Day, which will be his 20th birthday, and no other teenager has been within half-a-second of that time.
Fastest All-Time Swimmers, 200 Yard IM, Teenagers
- Shaine Casas, 1:40.16 – 2019 (19 years old)
- Hugo Gonzalez, 1:40.67 – 2018 (18 years old)
- David Nolan, 1:41.39 – 2011 (18 years old)
- Vini Lanza, 1:41.59 – 2017 (19 years old)
- Andrew Seliskar, 1:41.65 – 2016 (19 years old)
Coming out of high school, Casas’ best time was 1:47.59. Last season, he improved that to 1:42.29.
Time Progression:
- College Sophomore – 1:40.16
- College Freshman – 1:42.29
- High School Senior – (Did Not Race)
- High School Junior – 1:47.59
- High School Sophomore – 1:52.96
This summer, in long course, Casas also became the fastest American teenager in the history of the 100 meter backstroke, where he swam a 52.72 to win the title at the US National Championships.
Race Video:
Casas also split 19.54 in the 50 free on a relay leadoff leg on Thursday evening, and is scheduled to swim on the Texas A&M 400 medley relay later in the day on Thursday.
His turns are not so great, especially his back-to-breast turn. With a little work on them he could easily go under 1:40. Otherwise awesome, strong swim!

This man is gonna win an Olympic medal in clear vanquishers
Some of great swimmers who spent final year or two at Nitro before going to college and doing some great things:
Taylor Abbott
Sean Grishop
Tate Jackson
Chris Yeager
Trent Jackson
Shaine Casas
Matt Ellis
Will Licon
Joe Schooling (ok, he just practiced over Christmas at Nitro before winning Ollympics, stil..:)
I am sure I missed some great swimmers.
A lil generous including Matt Ellis
Matt Ellis was a National Team Member. That qualifies as a great thing in my book.
Pretty sure shaine trained there for 2 months.
The Texas A&M coaching staff has done a wonderful job developing this kid’s potential. Congrats!
jason is magic!
I’ve seen an uptick in the type of recruits TAMU is getting. Will be interesting to see if the Men’s team can get closer to the level the women have been at for years (NCAA top 5)
I think they might have what it takes
Saw him swim the 200 IM long course this summer and he decided to dolphin kick the breaststroke and seems the officials DQ him. He obviously has a amazing fly back first half. Did he take breaststroke lessons? Love to see the race.
Knee injury before NATs this past summer.
Damn
Okay.. I see you. You are now on my radar as a legit Olympic contender. In case it wasn’t implied already, congrats! Amazing swim!!
