Team Scores: Georgia in control, Stanford making moves on day 1

What looked like a two-team battle between Cal and Georgia is getting a little more interesting with one of three nights in the books at the women’s Division I NCAA Championships. A strong night from Stanford has the Cardinal running second, although they’ll still have their work cut out for them holding off a Cal team that seems to have a big day 2 lineup.

Georgia actually faded just a bit from their projected points coming out of prelims, but it wasn’t significant and mostly had to do with the 200 free relay where they moved down out of the tie for the #1 seed. Stanford swept the relays for huge points, and that’ll probably have to be their ticket moving forward. After Cal moved down some points-wise coming out of prelims, they gained that ground back at night with some strong finals swims.

USC seems to be outdoing our pre-meet predictions somewhat on day 1 – they sit fourth and almost 20 up on Texas A&M. One team we had ranked in our top 10 that took a tumble tonight was Virginia. The Cavaliers struggled some coming out of prelims and the DQ of their 400 medley relay from the A final was a big blow. They’ve fallen to 15th with just 18 points.

In addition, Minnesota and Wisconsin are both hanging in the top 10 right now at 9th and 10th. Minnesota did it on depth, scoring an athlete in every event tonight, while Wisconsin got several big swims out of sprint sensation Ivy Martin.

I didn’t watch day 1 and unfortunately I will not watch day 2 and day 3.
So I just read the results to analyze.

WHAT A FANTASTIC NIGHT FOR STANFORD!
I would have never thought they would win both relays.

4X50 free relay
I thought Georgia would have begun the meet with a win.
No. Stanford disagreed. With a huge Felicia Lee as team leader and 3 other girls who have swum at their best.
Great and surprising second place for Cal. A very homogeneous relay.
Georgia slower than I expected despite a monster Olivia Smoliga but with 2 average legs by Maddie Locus and Jessica Graber.
Margo Geer only in 22.04 on… Read more »

About Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson swam for nearly twenty years. Then, Jared Anderson stopped swimming and started writing about swimming. He's not sick of swimming yet. Swimming might be sick of him, though. Jared was a YMCA and high school swimmer in northern Minnesota, and spent his college years swimming breaststroke and occasionally pretending …
