Question: Will the 2021 Olympics be canceled?

  • No – 68.4%
  • Yes – 31.6%

More than two-thirds of voters are still optimistic that the Tokyo Olympics will go on in 2021 without a cancellation.

The Tokyo Olympics were originally scheduled for the summer of 2020, but were postponed to 2021 in the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. However, more and more high-level decision-makers have speculated that the Games are far from a lock to happen in 2021, and stakeholders have strongly implied that if the novel 2019 coronavirus pandemic doesn’t clear up, the Olympics are far more likely to be completely canceled than postponed again. Among that group are Tokyo Olympics CEO Toshiro Muto (story here), Japan Medical Association head Yoshitake Yokokura (story here) and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (story here).

Well over a year out at this point, there are plenty of factors that could affect the Olympic Games. A vaccine for the novel 2019 coronavirus and the related COVID-19 illness has been a key piece, as well as a slow-down in the spread of the virus and death rates in various countries. Many sporting events over the next year could happen without spectators, but even that requires athletes, team personnel and event officials to be tested and/or vaccinated for the virus.

Below, vote in our new A3 Performance Pollwhich asks voters if they’d rather break a U.S. Open record (for the fastest swim on American soil by a swimmer of any nationality) or win an NCAA event title:
