SwimSwam Podcast: How Getting Kicked Off the Team Changed Jason Lezak’s Career

On SwimSwam Podcast, we’re giving you an in-depth listen at all things swimming. Host Coleman Hodges welcomes guests and guest co-hosts alike to get perspective on our ever-changing swimming universe and break down the past, present, and future of aquatic sports.

We sat down with American legend Jason Lezak to talk about how he was able to stay in the sport for as long as he did (and continues to today). What many may not know was that Lezak was a swimmer from a young age, and in his age group days was quite good. But when he got to 11-14, a lot of his peers took off while his development in the pool was rather stunted. Through high school and a newfound interest in being on a team, Lezak was able to improve enough to get a scholarship to the University of California, Santa Barbara.

It was at UCSB that Lezak made a big jump in progression times wise, but also made a regression in attitude. This ultimately led to him being kicked off the team at one point. Only by sitting down and making a contract with his coach was he able to re-earn his spot on the team. Lezak recognizes this as a huge turning point for him, allowing him to realize what he truly wanted out of the sport and what he was willing to sacrifice.
