This week on the SwimSwam Breakdown, we discuss the myriad of coaching changes that were reported last week, the wave of new international teenage talent on the men’s side, and the fast weekend of racing from the NCAA. See our full list of topics below:
- We saw a myriad of athletes announce coaching changes last week, including
- Leah Smith heading to Texas to train with Carol Capitani and Mitch Dalton
- Kathleen Baker currently training with NC State while staying in North Carolina
- Mack Horton moving to Gold Coast to train with Michael Bohl
- Kaylee McKeown testing out many elite coaches in Queensland, including Michael Bohl, Dean Boxall, and her old coach Chris Mooney
- Bronte Campbell seeking a new coach, choosing to stay in Sydney instead of following her coach of 20+ years to Brisbane
- Melanie Margalis training with MAAC, Georgia Tech after moving to Atlanta
- The young guns are firing. Hwang Sunwoo was the latest, dropping a 1:58.0 LCM 200 IM in only his 2nd time swimming the event ever. This prompted the question: which of SwimSwam’s ‘Stealthy 6’ top young talent will perform biggest this summer?
- There was a flurry of NCAA activity, as many athletes posted top times on both coasts and everywhere in between. See the full NCAA recap here.
SINK or SWIM
- Are the cuts for the 2022 International Team Trials fair?
- Should recruiting for swimming & diving be delayed?
- Are off-distance dual meets a good thing for the sport? (See Cal/UVA, UNC/NC State, UVA/Georgetown)
- Do the CSCAA Preseason Polls mean anything?
- Who Danced better this week? Adam Peaty or Pernille Blume

Can you comment on the recent spat between Lotte Friis and Jeanette Ottesen Grey?
Ooh, is that how you say Bronte Campbell’s first name?
Bron-TUH and not Bron-TAY.
And then we get “wonder kind” so maybe I’m not taking cues on pronunciation from Coleman. (I assume he learned it from a podcast I still am <3)
I wouldn’t either. As Mel loves to remind me, I’m from Missouri and have an SEC education
You mean you’re from “Missouruh.”
I think it’s more of an accent thing than a “correct” thing.
For example, I just watched a video about “Bronte Beach” in Australia, and it was pronounced “Bront-ee.”
Welp guess it’s sorta just like a “choose your own adventure” kinda deal so I’m gonna go with “Bront” in my head for now on. (Pronounced the same way you would “turnt.”)
It’s Bron-TEE
I’m into this “Pardon the Interruption” format – these have become quite entertaining as Coleman and the gang have gotten more reps.
The review of the review that no one asked for:
-agree with the group that most are looking in the rear view mirror trying to catch their old music. The Aussies mentioned are definitely closer with Mack 3rd place time at Trials still would have medaled in Tokyo. Margalis has been dating Nic Fink for a long time and he is going to GT grad school so I assume that is the natural fit here and assume he is training there too? Lastly, where is Ryan Held training? Did I see somewhere that he is at ASU?
-i think the young guns will be on fire in Paris. Braden, Titmus didn’t have to have a medal to have a… Read more »
On your second points about Sunwoo training for the 2IM and it potentially taking away from his freestyle – I know for a fact Dressel and the Florida pros do a TON of IM training. Dressel talks frequently about how the other three strokes help his freestyle. I don’t think it’s necessarily a tradeoff between IM and freestyle; they can help each other.
I agree….it depends on his coaches philosophy. We don’t see Caleb adding it to Olympic or World schedule. He has a big relay lineup where Sunwoo probably not so much?
This is the third time in a row we complain about that airhorn sound. Please remove it.
Thanks 🙏
Take a ‘lude, dude. There are bigger problems in the world today.
Does it make your dog lose its mind or something?
I don’t even notice it half the time, and when I do, it’s always funny.
It‘s annoying.
That’s just your opinion, man.
I find it whimsical and goofy, my two favorite things. (And I just wanna know why removing the sound can be your business, but me wanting it to stay cannot be my business? Very unfair.)
