- Entry List
The pool swimming portion of the European Championships is upon us and we finally have insight into the entries. We’ll be combing through the lists and reporting on any notable exceptions, omissions or additions but here they are in their entirety.
As a reminder, for many athletes, these Championships serve as one of the final qualifying opportunities for this summer’s Olympic Games. For instance, we reported how Great Britain’s roster includes 12 individuals specifically seeking Olympic qualifications for events whose slots did not get filled at the British Swimming Championships. You can refresh yourself on the British roster here.
At the 2016 edition of the European Championships, Hungary topped the overall swimming medal table, although the nation reaped just 3 more total pieces of hardware than runner-up Great Britain. Italy rounded out the top 3, while Netherlands and France completed the top 5 finishers from a country perspective.
Below is a reminder of the swimming event schedule for this week. With the 400m IM kicking off day 1, we’ll be treated to Hungary’s Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu right off the bat. The men’s 100m breaststroke also takes place day 1, which means world record holder Adam Peaty will be in the water to get the party started as well.

Tom Dean deciding not to do the 400 free, probably the best choice as he is likely not a medal prospect in that event and he still has the individual 200 free, 4×100 and 4×200 free relays later in the week, all of which he is a medal favourite in.
I don’t think James Guy is doing 200 Fly either. He has 100 Fly, 4×200, 4×100 medley, and mixed medley.
I doubt GB tapered for this meet as with 2016 euros so thy probably won’t do fast times.
Yeah, confirmed at Trials, everybody named on the Olympic team will be training through Euros. It’s just a race prep meet. I imagine that’ll be the case for most major countries, perhaps apart from the Dutch and Hungarians (anybody know?), they seem to always swim fast at Euros.
Tom Dean is about as interested in 400free as James Guy is. 100/200 man mindset
potential for a great matchup between peaty and kamminga in the 100. peaty was 58.4 at this meet 5 years ago before going 57.1 in rio, a time he has done in every major final since (except for a 57.4 in 2017). meanwhile kamminga was recently 57.9 and has been consistently 58 mid in the last year
The only different will just be that Kamminga is tapered and Peaty isn’t
I just have the feeling that peaty is going to go 56.9 in finals unrested just through training because of his 57.3 last month but I could be completely wrong too.
That would be huge ! Apparently he’s been focusing on his pullouts since the ISL so he might enter a whole new level this year
Morozov isn’t entered for 50 freestyle.
I don’t think he was entered at all i seem to remember him being on a reserve list?
He might be back to his US base?
