Anybody who’s been following along this season knew that David Marsh was assembling a huge group of elites in Charlotte at his SwimMAC Carolina club for this summer, with a combination of his full-time pros, high school swimmers who are already stars, and college swimmers who are in town for some summer training.
Now, we can quantify that success, as SwimMAC Carolina is dominating the team scoring through two days at the 2014 U.S. National Championships.
The SwimMAC women have more points than any other women’s squad, the SwimMAC men have more points than any other men’s squad, and in combined team scores, nobody is within 50 points of them so far.
Having Ryan Lochte and Tyler Clary each earning a top three finish on each of the first two days; winning the men’s and women’s 400 free relays helped even more (despite declaring a false start in the men’s 800).
Things don’t slow down any time soon for SwimMAC either. With Paul Powers representing them this summer before heading off to Michigan, he and Mark Weber should be in play for scoring in the 50 free. Clary and Ty Stewart are the #2 and #3 seeds in the 400 IM, while Ryan Lochte, Matthew Josa, and Tim Phillips both have the 100 fly on Friday. The women’s team will count on big points from Cammile Adams in a 400 IM/100 fly double, and both sides will score big with two stroke 50 races.
Expect SwimMAC’s lead to be over 100 points at the end of Friday, though second-place Cal’s combined squad (with its own built-in college roster) still has a lot of punch left at this meet.
