Sun Yang Given Preferential Treatment While Incarcerated

Olympic champion Sun Yang was released for the Hangzhou detention centre on Monday and managed to escape the crowd of reporters waiting for him by jetting out the side door into a van with tinted windows.

Sun had been sentenced to a week in the detention centre and fined approximately $328 USD for driving without a license.

After speaking to both a chef and an inmate at the detention centre the Wuhan Morning News is reporting that Sun was given preferential treatment during his stay, which did not sit well with other inmates. According to the report a special vegetarian diet was created for the swimmer so that there was no risk of him eating contaminated meat that may have effected both his future training and doping tests.

Sun was not the only inmate who received this diet, because the kitchen had to prepare these meals for the swimmer the other inmates were also given the same food, something that was not met with a positive response. It was reported that one inmate (who would not give his name) told the news agency because the diet was found to be intolerable by many they actually asked that Sun be removed from the detention centre.

Although Sun was released from the detention centre on Monday he has not returned home and is currently living in a confidential location. Zhang Yadong, the vice president of the Zhejiang College of Sports, where Sun trains, told the press the reason for this is to “avoid being disturbed.”
