Sydney DeBaecke from Hockessin, Delaware has made a verbal commitment to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University’s class of 2026.

DeBaecke is a senior at Tower Hill School in Wilmington. She swims year-round for Suburban Seahawks Club in Newtown Square, PA and specializes in back, free, and IM. She was a major factor in the Hilliers’ second-straight team title at the 2021 Delaware High School State Swimming and Diving Championships, winning the 200 IM (2:05.31), 200 free relay (25.24 split) and 400 free relay (54.73) and finishing second in the 100 back (55.83).
In club swimming, she notched PBs in the 200 free, 100 back, and 200 IM at the Senior Keystone Classic in March, and in the 100 free and 50/200 back at the Middle Atlantic Swimming Senior Short Course Championships in April. She had a strong showing in LCM this summer, too, picking up a slew of new times at NCSA Summer Championships. Finaling in the 200 free (13th), 400 free (6th), 200 back (6th), and 200 IM (14th), she went LCM best times of:
- 200 back – 2:18.18
- 200 IM – 2:22.60
- 200 free – 2:06.03
- 400 free 4:25.58
Best SCY times:
- 200 back – 1:57.92
- 100 back – 55.78
- 50 back – 26.67
- 200 free – 1:50.07
- 100 free – 52.11
- 200 IM – 2:03.83
- 400 IM – 4:25.44
DeBaecke will join the H2Okies with Carmen Weiler, Caroline Foltz, Emily Claesson, and Isabel Marstellar. Her best 200 back time would have been on the B/C final bubble at 2021 ACC Championships, whereas it took 54.66 in the 100 back, 1:49.28 in the 200 free, 4:23.54 in the 400 IM, and 2:01.20 in the 200 IM to get a second swim at the conference meet this past season.
