Stanford wins 11 of 13 events to roll past UCLA

The Stanford women rolled through the UCLA Bruins on Friday, topping 11 of 13 events enroute to a 151-92 victory.

The Stanford relay of Alley Howe, Katie Olson, Mackenzie Stein, and Simone Manuel was disqualified, leaving it up to Janet Hu, Sarah Haase, Lindsey Engel, and Julia Ama to get the Cardinal going early in 400 medley relay. The foursome did just that, combining for a 3:38.82 victory, over three seconds ahead of the UCLA relay, which hit the wall in 3:42.15.

Following the relay, Katy Campbell and Michaela Merlihan took the top two spots in the 1000 for the Bruins, touching in 10:02.47 and 10:06.40, respectively. Allison Brown took third for Stanford with a 10:09.21.

Campbell secured UCLA’s only other win of the evening with a 4:52.83 in the 500, and was followed in again by Merlihan in 4:55.25. Tara Halsted, who did not swim the 1000, took third for Stanford, hitting the wall with a 4:58.22.

Outside the distance freestyles, it was Stanford’s night. Lia Neal was a big winner, doubling up with wins in both the 200 freestyle (1:48.22), and the 100 freestyle (49.52), outdoing UCLA’s Monica Dornick in both events. She was the only swimmer under 50 seconds in the 100.

Neal and Dornick dueled in the 200, with Neal out touching Dornick by just .11 hundredths of a second. At the 100 mark, Neal lead 53.28 to 52.79. Neal was able to outlast a hard charge from Dornick over the second half for the win.

Manuel won 50 freestyle decisively over her teammate Hu, with a 22.41 to Hu’s 22.81.

Hu would go on to win the 200 fly with a 1:57.12. UCLA’s Katie Grover took second with a  1:58.20

Howe was another big winner for the Cardinal, winning both the 200 IM, in 2:01.23, and the 200 backstroke, in 1:57.05. In the 200 backstroke, Howe beat the field by over two seconds. UCLA’s Madison White was second with a 1:59.14.

The Cardinal rounded out the meet victory with a win in the 400 freestyle relay from Ama, Neal, Manuel, and Engel. The relay touched with a 3:19.18, almost six full seconds ahead of UClA’s A relay. The UCLA A relay touched with a 3:25.17. Manuel had the fastest split of the event with a 48.79.
