St Joseph Girls’ Relays Dominate Mississippi Class 1 High School State

The girls of St. Joseph Catholic swept the relay events to propel themselves to a 59-point victory in the Mississippi High School Athletics Association Class 1 Championships yesterday.

To start off the meet, Anna Nicholas, Avery Nicholas, Arilyn Thomas, and Ellie Smith teamed up for a 2:02.17 to win the 200 medley. Then, Avery Nicholas, Smith, Caleigh Hankins, and Emma Adkins came together for 1:47.79 for a 200 free relay victory. The St. Joseph Catholic team of Anna Nicholas, Hankins, Elizabeth Weisenberger, and Adkins closed out the meet with 4:04.05 for the 400 free relay championship.

Anna Nicholas and Weisenberger took an event victory apiece to contribute to their overall team victory. Nicholas, a fourteen-year-old, won the 100 back in 1:03.36, while Weisenberger won the 500 free in 5:51.95.

Cait Chandler of Vancleave High School scored a pair of victories in the 100 free (55.00) and the 200 free (2:00.14). Madison McLean of the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science was the other double victor with 2:19.65 in the 200 IM and 1:12.83 in the 200 breast.

Other event winners included Cameron Tubb of Amory High School in the 50 free (26.00) and Ginny Ray Clevenger of Itawamba in the 100 fly with 1:03.94.
