BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Francis College Brooklyn Women’s Swimming and Diving team concluded the Brooklyn Invite with a pair of wins over NEC foes, LIU and Merrimack. The win over LIU was the first in program history for the Terriers as they took down the Sharks, 173-149. In addition, St. Francis handled Merrimack by a final score of 256-65 as it is off to a 2-0 start to begin the 2019-20 campaign.
The Terriers had numerous standouts on Day 1 of the meet, highlighted by junior Ana Paula Montes de Oca earning a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. The Mexico City native also took first in the 200-yard butterfly.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Kayla McKenzie notched a score of 206.75 in the one-meter dive to earn her a first-place finish. The sophomore later posted a mark of 191.35 in the three-meter dive.
- The 400-yard medley relay team of Abigail Wood, Fanny Stromstedt, Tina Childress, and Jovana Terzic earned a second-place finish to kick-off the meet. They compiled a time of 4:04:38.
- In the 200-yard freestyle event, the Terriers had two student-athletes finish in the top three. Montes De Oca was victorious with a time of 1:55.77. Beatriz Gomes Angelo finished in third-place with a time of 2:00.42.
- Mariajose Lopez and Fanny Stromstedt took top-three in the 400IM. Lopez finished with a time of 4:48.49 and placed second. Stromstedt completed her race with a time of 4:50.76 and placed third.
- In the 50-yard freestyle event, the Terriers had three student-athletes finish in the top five. Childress took first with a time of 25.48. Terzic finished in second-place with a time of 25.78. Raphaelle Gregoire took fifth-place with a time of 26.02.
- To conclude the afternoon, the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay took first-place with Jovana Terzic, Beatriz Gomes Angelo, Raphaelle Gregoire, and Tina Childress. They finished with a time of 1:42.39.
Day two was highlighted by Stromstedt, who would earn a first-place finish in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke. The Brooklyn Invite took place at the Steinberg Wellness Center on LIU’s Brooklyn campus, and kicked off at St. Francis Brooklyn’s Aquatic Center on Friday.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Senior Fanny Stromstedt took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke. The Swedish native posted a final time of 1:08:48. Senior Raphaelle Gregoire logged a third-place finish with a time of 1:10.06. Fellow senior Lara Milak came in just behind the former with a time of 1:10.71 to tally a fifth-place finish.
- The Terriers handled the 500-yard freestyle by earning a first, second and fifth place finish. Registering a first-place finish was Montes De Oca with a time of 5:08.56. Taking second place with a time of 5:08.90 was Lopez. Sophomore Angelica Stark concluded the event with a time of 5:25.80 and took fourth.
- Three swimmers landed a top-five finish in the 100-yard butterfly, that included Childress (1:01.20), Terzic (1:01.90), and Hanne Romstad (1:03.08), who logged a fifth-place finish.
- Stromstedt earned a first-place finish by logging 2:26.41 in the 200-yard breaststroke.
- Abbey Wood had standout performance in the 100-yard backstroke by taking second place and earning a time of 1:03.54.
- For the 100-yard freestyle, the Terriers also had three swimmers finish in the top five. Montes De Oca finished in first place with a time of 54.82. Lopez finished right behind her in second place with a time of 55:75, and Terzic with a time of 56:40 for the fifth-place spot.
- Gomes Angelo competed in the 200-yard IM and finished third place with a time of 2:19.79.
- St. Francis College took second and third place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Earning a second-place finish was Ana Paula Montes De Oca, Jovana Terzic, Beatriz Gomes Angelo, Tina Childress with a final time of 3:40.99. Just behind them in third-place was Angelica Stark, Hanne Romstad, Mariajose Lopez, Angelina Gonzalez with a finishing time of 3:49.51.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU women’s swimming team completed its first meet of the year Saturday afternoon in LIU Pool. The Sharks wrapped up the two-day Brooklyn Invitational, hosting the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers and the Merrimack Warriors. LIU split with the two teams, as SFBK beat the Sharks, 173-149, while LIU triumphed over Merrimack, 237-58.
On Friday, the Sharks took the top spot in the first event of the day, taking first and third in the 400 medley relay. The squad of Amanda Peren, Tara Cabiling, Noemie Lacroix-Moreau and Lydia Amon won the event in 4:02.51, while the team of Jacqueline Grabowski, Jeanne Touchette-McGowan, Amanda San Juan and Gillian Pierce-But took third in 4:08.95.
Touchette-McGowan had LIU’s other first place finish of the day, as she dominated in the 400 IM, winning by nearly six seconds, with a time of 4:42.25.
LIU also had podium finishes for three other individuals, as Peren came in second in the 200 free, in 1:49.23, Lacroix-Moreau came in second in the 200 yard butterfly (2:14.98), and Amon took third in the 50 free (25.78).
The Sharks capped the night by taking two of the top three spots in the 200 free relay. The team of Amon, Pierce-But, Cabiling and Peren took second, in 1:42.87, and the squad of Grabowski, Touchette-McGowan, Lacroix-Moreau and Madison McCarthy came in third with a time of 1:45.17.
On Saturday, the day started out strongly for the Sharks, as a freshman finished in the top three in the first race. Cabiling came in second in the 100 breast, with a time of 1:09.49. And in the next event, the 200 back, LIU swept the top three spots. Peren won the event, in 2:06.58, while Grabowski came in second (2:15.18), and Amon came in third (2:16.11).
The rest of the first half of the day was highlighted by San Juan finishing second in the 100 butterfly (1:01.78), while freshman Reyna Iwamoto took third in the 500 free (5:18.18). LIU also took first and third in the 200 medley relay. The team of Peren, Cabiling, Grabowski and Amon won, in 1:50.93, while the squad of Pierce-But, Touchette-McGowan, Lacroix-Moreau and McCarthy came in third, in 1:56. 57.
The second half of the meet saw more strong finishes at the wall for the Sharks, including the 200 breaststroke. LIU went 2-3-4 in the event, as Cabiling came in second (2:26.64), Touchette-McGowan came in third (2:29.01), and Mackenzie Burnett finished fourth (2:31.42). Lacroix-Moreau had one of the top finishes of the day, as she won the 100 back in 1:02.14, while Peren won the 200 IM, in 2:10.98. San Juan came in second in the 200 IM, in 2:17.98, while Amon had a third place finish in the 100 free, with a time of 55.80.
LIU capped the day with a win in the 400 free relay, as Touchette-McGowan, Amon, Peren and Lacroix-Moreau out-touched St. Francis Brooklyn at the wall, winning the event in 3:39.90.
Up next, the Sharks head over the river to take part in the NJIT Invitational in New Jersey, October 11-12.

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women’s swimming team competed in its first Division I meet over the weekend. The Warriors faced off against Northeast Conference (NEC) opponents Long Island University and St. Francis Brooklyn.

Top Highlights
- Freshman Jordan Clements posted one of the top finishes for the Warriors in the 200-yard Butterfly with a time of 2:18:26
- Senior Andrea Taylor had a third-place finish of her own in the 100-yard Backstroke after posting a 1:04:74 time. Taylor nearly finished in first, falling just two seconds short of the top time
- Senior Lucia Quesada Nylen had three fourth place finishes in the 50, 100, and 200 freestyle events, posting times of 25.87, 55.81, and 2:03.73 respectfully.
- Junior Brenna Roberts impressed individually, posting a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke and added a fifth-place ranking in the 200-yard backstroke. Roberts’ time in the 100-yard swim was 1:05.62, less than four seconds off from earning the top billing
- In relays, the team’s best efforts came in the 200-yard freestyle relay as well as the 200-yard medley relay. Both quartets finished in fourth. The medley group of Taylor, Clements, junior Erin Claflin and Quesada Nylen posted a time of 1:57.34, besting the fifth-place team by 0:00.02 seconds for exciting race to the line to snatch fourth. Clafin’s performance in the third leg was particularly impressive as she bested her opposition from St. Francis Brooklyn by nearly a full second.
- The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Taylor, Claflin, freshman Kirsten Currie and Quesada Nylen earned a top-five finish as well in a down-to-the wire race that saw spots No. 3-5 decided by less than a second. The Warriors finsihed in fourth, with Quesada Nylen’s effort as the anchor (25.39) moving the team into fourth.
- Saturday’s meet marked Merrimack’s first against Northeast Conference (NEC) competition and first against LIU and Saint Francis Brooklyn
