Sprint News 7/5/12: GWG to Hall of Fame; Paris Open Start Lists

…2008 Olympian Garrett Weber-Gale has been announced in the latest class of the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. The two-time Olympic gold medalist and 5-time World Champion is the latest in an impressive line of swimmers inducted. The hall, located in Commack, New York, has previously honored swimmers like Dara Torres, Anthony Ervin, Lenny Krayzelburg, Scott Goldblatt, Jason Lezak, and the legendary Mark Spitz. Altogether, Weber-Gale will make the 12th swimmer inducted into this illustrious list of athletes

…The 2012 edition of the EDF Paris Open will run Friday and Saturday. Though in the Olympic year, it doesn’t have quite the same international depth as it has in previous years, the lineup will still include national stars Yannick Agnel and Camille Muffat. Among the international participants this year include Laszlo CsehKirsty CoventryTherese AlshammarMatt Targett, and Femke Heemskerk. …SMU’s head women’s coach Steve Collins has been named to the Bulgarian Olympic coaching staff to accompany junior-to-be Nina Rangelova at the games. Rangelova has accepted invites for the 100, 200, and 400 freestyles. Altogether, SMU will have 7 current or former swimmers at the Olympic Games (including Laura Bennett, who is part of the American triathlon squad…

…Grand Canyon University has had a breakthrough on the international level, as their defending Division II 100 and 200 breaststroke champion has qualified for the World Short Course Championships in the 100 breaststroke. Eetu Karvonen’s 58.44 from his native Finland’s SCM National championships ties for the world lead very early in the 2012-2013 season. Full results for the 4-day meet are available here. It features much of the rising Finnish national contingent, including Hanna-Maria Seppala and Ari-Pekka Liukkonen in the women’s and men’s sprints, respectively…

The Paris Open is Friday and Saturday at 6PM (french hour), noon (eastern time in USA). It’s live on eurosport so you will easily find links on the web.

A curiosity:
In the last years(2010-2011) Brazil team and Cielo always used Paris Open as a fine tunning meeting, normally before taper of a Big Champs(like Worlds).This year, it looks they will not make a last meeting call before Olympics.

I am disappointed too. I was looking forward to the showdown between Cielo and the french sprinters.
