Spaniard Teresa Perales, the most decorated Paralympian from her nation, was finally able to leave Tokyo yesterday after having been hospitalized the majority of last week. The 45-year-old owner of 27 career medals suffered an anxiety attack, per the Spanish Paralympic Committee.

Upon her return to her native Spain, Perales will reportedly be taken to a hospital once again before ultimately going home.

Perales took silver in the 50m backstroke in Tokyo, with this year’s Games representing her sixth Paralympics appearance. Before that, however, she was honored with Spain’s prestigious Prince of Asturias award,

In June, Spain honored Perales’ illustrious athletic career by giving her the Prince of Asturias award, given to individuals, entities or organizations from around the world ‘who make notable achievements in the sciences, humanities, and public affairs.’ She was the first swimmer to earn the award.

Neuropathy made Perales lose the use of her legs at 19. She competes in the S5 class for her events.
