University of South Carolina women’s swimming and diving has had a great recruiting season so far, securing verbal commitments from Paige Maynard, Emma Barksdale, and now Arizona’s Katie Shannahan and Ohio’s Marissa DelGado.
Shannahan swims with Scottsdale Aquatic Club and is a Winter Juniors qualifier in the 100y and 200y butterfly, with 54.99 and 2:02.59, respectively. She has also clocked a 2:04.25 200y IM and been 57.07 in the 100y back.
Swimming for Desert Mountain High School, Shannahan was the 2013 Arizona state high school champion in the 200 IM and 100 fly.
DelGado swims for Cincinnati Marlins. She’s a national-level qualifier in the 200y fly (1:59.97), 200y IM (2:03.60) and 100y fly (55.93). She broke 2:00 as a B-finalist at the 2014 NCSA Spring Championships in Orlando.
As a member of the St Ursula Academy team, DelGado placed eighth in the 200 IM and fourth in the 100 fly at the 2014 Ohio State High School Swimming and Diving Championships.
The Gamecocks are losing several butterfly/IM specialists after this season so Shannahan and DelGado will add strength to those events. They are both just shy of the 2014 SEC cutoff time to final in the 100 fly but DelGado would have made the 200 fly and Shannahan isn’t far off.
The University of South Carolina women’s swimming and diving class of 2019 is beginning to take shape.
Congratulations to the University of South Carolina and Katie Shannahan. Having watched Katie swim and progress over the years I am certain that USC will be very happy with Katie’s decision. I know that Katie will continue to progress and do good things in South Carolina. Great Kid- Great Swimmer- Marginal Jumper! Go Katie!
