The 2015 South Australian State Short Course Championships wrapped up action today from Oaklands Park, but not before some shake-ups occurred in the SC world rankings.

Marion Swimming Club’s Kyle Chalmers was back in the water after winning the men’s 100m freestyle event earlier this weekend. MSC teammate Andrew Abood was second in that race, but got the better of Chalmers in the splash n’ dash 50m event to reverse the roles. Abood’s time of 22.21 was two tenths over Chalmers’ second place-earning time of 22.41, but both men made a move in the world rankings. Abood is now tied for 10th in the world in the event, while Chalmers positioned himself tied for 16th. Chalmers now moves on with his Australian Worlds squad to a staging camp in Doha before moving on to Kazan for the FINA World Championships next month. The 17-year old is competing in Russia as part of Australia’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
Ben Edmonds, also from Marion, did some damage across multiple events over the course of the meet, claiming wins in the 50m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 200m backstroke and 200m IM events. Edwards’ 200m backstroke was his best performance, where he won the event in a time of 1:56.08, which not only beat the field by over four seconds, but also situated him as 9th-fastest in the world. Times for his other events include 24.78 for 50m backstroke, 1:49.36 for 200m freestyle and 2:00.96 for 200m IM.
On the women’s side of the competition, 30-year old MSC member Sally Hunter cranked out the number one time in the world in the women’s 50m short course breaststroke, winning the event here in 30.69. Hunter would also sprint her way to the top of the podium in the 50m freestyle, winning that race in a swift time of 25.30 to rank 13th in the world overall. Not done yet, Hunter clocked a super speedy 1:06.50 100m breaststroke to win the race and register within the world’s top 5 in the event, then concluded the meet with a victory in the 50m butterfly contest in 26.70, another world-class time.
Brandon Riley 12yr old from Western Sharks took out numerous medals and broke the 200m backstroke record. Well done
There was also a young 14 year old girl, Bethan Mounfield from Fleurieu Swimming Club, who took out many medals plus two South Australian State Titles, one of which was Anna McVann’s 14 year girls 800m Freestyle record that has stood for 32 years!
