South Africa Announces 10 Swimmer Team for IPC World Championships

South Africa announced it’s 10 member team for the IPC World Championships that will run from July 13th-19th in Glasgow.

The team will include Kevin Paul, Hendrik Herbst, Achmat Hassiem and Emily Gray who all represented their nation at the Paralympics in 2012. The complete team includes seven men and three women.

Men – Hendrik Herbst, Kevin Paul, Achmat Hassiem, Johann van Heerden, Challis Wright, Hendrik van der Merwe and James Bezuidenhout.

Women – Emily Gray, Adri Visser and Beth Nothling.

At the last IPC World Championships in Montreal in 2013 South Africa tied with France for 22nd with one gold, two silver and four bronze.

This year’s event in Glasgow will host over 600 swimmers from 50 different nations.

“Swimming has always been one of the codes which has made South African sport proud,” said Tubby Reddy the CEO of South Africa Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).

“This occasion should be no different. These are all top swimmers and I have no doubt that they’ll grab a good few medals in Glasgow.”

“We wish the team all the very best in Glasgow where our swimmers had a successful Commonwealth Games last year,” said SASCOC President Gideon Sam.

“With the retirement of some of our leading para-swimmers in the last while it’s now up to this group of talented athletes to step up to the plate and show that they can still fly the SA flag proudly. We are only just over a year from the Rio Paralympics and this is an ideal platform for our para-swimmers to shine.”
