Swimming Australia had another strong session during day 2 prelims of the 2017 FINA World Aquatics Championships on Sunday, putting 4 women and 2 men into the semifinals of their respective events. The results are encouraging for a country that has struggled over the last several years to put together peak performances on the world stage.
Defending World Champion Emily Seebohm and fellow 100 backstroker Holly Barratt shared their thoughts after swimming in the 100 back prelims this morning. Seebohm is the 2nd seed for tonight’s semifinals, while Barratt heads into the semis at 6th. Below are a selection of soundbites from Australia’s swimmers after prelims.
- Emily Seebohm after cruising to a 58.95 in the 100 back: “Yeah a 58.9, I was pretty happy with that this morning,” Seebohm said. “It felt reasonably cruisy and I know that my turn wasn’t that good, so I know that I can make up a little bit just on that and apart from that I can swim faster; I saved some room for tonight and I know tonight is going to be pretty tough to make it through.”
- Teammate Holly Barratt on her nerves before prelims and qualifying for semis: “I was a bit nervous this morning, obviously this is my first swim, so I was very happy to get it out of the way and I feel a lot more relaxed now,” Barratt said. “The race itself felt pretty good so I’m excited about tonight.”
