Sophie Hansson Becomes 3rd Woman Under 57 in 100 Breast With ACC Record

2022 ACC SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Robert Gibbs contributed reporting.

Sophie Hansson is well-prepared to defend her NCAA title in the 100 breast after winning the ACC title today in 56.72.

Hansson broke the ACC record set by Alexis Wenger at 57.22. If Hansson had not been swimming, Wenger would’ve lowered her own record, having come in 2nd at 56.76. But the race was tight, and it looked like Wenger would win for 97 yards, until Hansson out-touched the person who broke her meet and conference record this morning by .04.

Hansson is the 3rd woman ever to swim below 57 in the 100 breast, and she reclaims her spot as the 3rd-fastest performer in the event. The first two women to have done so are Lilly King at 55.73 and Molly Hannis at 56.64.

Wenger is the 4th woman ever to swim below 57 seconds. Hansson and Wenger rank No. 3 and No. 4 in the event, respectively.

Lilly King 100 Breast Splits (2019)  Molly Hannis 100 Breast Splits (2017) Sophie Hansson 100 Breast Splits (2022)
25.98 26.36 26.68
29.75 30.28 30.04
Total: 55.73 Total: 56.64 Total: 56.72

This is Hansson’s 4th-straight time winning the 100 breaststroke at ACC Championships. She’s a 17-time All-American.

Hansson won NCAAs last year with her time of 57.23, winning NC State’s first individual title in program history. Wenger finished 3rd in 57.67, while Kaitlyn Dobler occupied 2nd with 57.46. We’ll get a rematch between Hansson and Wenger then.
