14 year Rebecca Smith of the Red Deer Catalina Swim Club had a very productive night of the 2015 Speedo Western Open. Smith took the first event of the evening the women’s 15 and under 100 freestyle in a time of 56.61. She did not just post the winning time, but Smith broke the Alberta provincial record for 14 year old girls of 56.65 which was set by Paige Kramer in 2011.
Smith then went on to win the 15 and under 50 backstroke in a time of 30.43 collecting her third gold of the competition.
Natasha Fung of the Keyano Swim Club took the 16 and over 100 freestyle in a time of 57.59 while Ingrid Wilm of the Cascade Swim Club took the 16 and over 50 backstroke in a time of 29.24.
After winning gold in the 200 breaststroke both Hannah Esopenko of the Prince George Barracuda’s and Mariya Chekanovych of the Arie Swim Club collected gold in the 100 breaststroke. Esopenko took the 15 and under event in a time of 1:12.76 while Chekanovych won the 16 and over event in a time of 1:13.38.
Sarah Darcel of Island Swimming took the 15 and under 400 IM in a time of 4:57.31. Emily Overholt of the West Vancouver Otters destroyed the field in the 16 and over 400 IM taking the event in a time of 4:46.69 almost 14 seconds ahead of the next competitor.
The Edmonton Keyano Swim Club took the women’s 800 freestyle relay in a time of 8:29.67.
Markus Thormeyer of the Winskill Dolphins Swim Club had another good day winning the 17 and over 100 freestyle and 50 backstroke. Thormeyer won the 100 freestyle in a time of 51.03 and the 50 backstroke in a time of 26.65.
Thormeyer’s teammate Tai Long Singh took the 16 and under 50 backstroke hitting the wall in a time of 27.46 while Stephen Calkins of the University of Calgary Swim Club took the 16 and under 100 freestyle in a time of 52.14.
Oliver Bidrman won his second gold of the competition taking the 16 and under 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:05.77. His teammate Jason Block also won his second gold of the competition taking the 17 and over event in a time of 1:03.10.
On the first night of the competition Josh Zakala won the 16 and under 100 backstroke and tonight he took the 400 IM in a time of 4:34.99. Robert Hill of the Chena Swim Club took the 17 and over event in a time of 4:32.79.
Island Swimming took the men’s 800 freestyle relay in a time of 7:41.91, 11 seconds ahead of the next closest team.
