15 year old Rebecca Smith from Red Deer won the women’s 15 & under 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle on the first night of competition at the Western Canadian Open, tonight in Winnipeg she collected two more wins in the 50 backstroke and 100 freestyle. Smith, who broke the Alberta age group record in the 200 freestyle, won the 50 backstroke in a time of 29.75 just ahead of Maddie McDonald who hit the wall in a time of 29.89. She took the 100 freestyle in a time of 56.36 nearly two seconds ahead of the field.
Smith’s 100 freestyle was the fastest of the evening beating the time posted by Mackenzie Padington who won the 16 & over event in a time of 56.90.
Jeremy Bagshaw won his second gold of the competition taking the 17 & over 100 freestyle in a time of 51.28.
Kelsey Wog won the women’s 16 & over 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:08.43. Wog beat both Rachel Nicol and Kierra Smith who both swam the event at the World Championships in Kazan. Nicol finished second in a time of 1:08.56 followed by Smith who touched in a time of 1:09.79.
Although Smith did not win the 100 breaststroke she went on to take the 400 IM in a time of 4:53.42.
The men’s 16 & under 100 breaststroke was an exciting event won by 200 breaststroke champion Jaren LeFranc who posted a 1:05.35. He was followed by Joshua Young who finished in a time of 1:05.90 and 13 year old Gabe Mastromatteo who hit the wall in a time of 1:05.91.
