Sjostrom Confirms Schedule for the World Championships

We could be patient and wait for the full start lists for swimming at the World Championships to come out, but why would we do that? That’s not our style.

As the Swedish team wraps up a short pre-Worlds training camp in Canet, France, Sarah Sjostrom has revealed her official schedule for the upcoming World Championships: the swimming leg of which begins in Barcelona on Sunday. She will swim the 100 fly (56.0 best), where she’s the former World Record holder, the 50 free (24.7 best from this year), the 100 free (53.0 best), and the 200 free (1:55.2 best).

This means no double-sessions from Sjostrom (aside from relays, which we still don’t know for sure if the Swedes will swim – though a 400 medley at least is likely coming).

This schedule actually works out pretty perfectly for her. The events are scheduled in order from most-likely to least-likely for her medal chances, in the opinion of this writer, meaning that she’s not really giving up much by adding the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th individual event. The 100 fly comes first, then the 200 free, then the 100 free, then the 50 free.

This means no 400 free for Sjostrom, an event in which she’s gone a lifetime best already this year, nor the 50 fly, where her best of 25.64 from last year’s European Championships would give her a great shot at a medal, and maybe even gold.

The Swedish National Training Center, of which Sjostrom is a part, has also launched its own website, which can be seen here.

I’ve picked Sarah to win 100m fly. Vollmer made a frightening tweet on 20 July though:

“Hard fly set this morning- I believe I just went faster than I ever have in my life!! Good sign!!”

Good sign for Dana, bad for my pick. Unless I change it, who knows? 🙂

Who knows, this might actually be a good sign for you & Sarah after all!

I mean, maybe Dana had misjudged her re-taper and peaked too soon… In which case she’ll just get slower with each day after the 20th 😉

hah, yes, or maybe Vollmer just tries to frighten her competitors. Rule nro 1: never make impetuous decisions.

I stick to SS.

I assume Sjoestrom will also swim in the 4×100 free prelims and final if Sweden qualifies, just like year. That means 4 swims in the first day.

35.0 for 100 free sounded a bit fast…
