Six Pool Records Go Down as Cal Beats UC San Diego 170-92 in Women’s Dual Meet

UCSD hosted Cal for a women’s dual meet on Friday, falling to the Golden Bears 170-92. The Canyonview Aquatic Center pool record board got rewritten, seeing Cal down four pool records and UCSD two.

Cal kicked off the meet with a pool record in the 400 medley relay, swimming a 3:38.93. Isabelle Stadden (54.09), Jade Neser (1:01.47), Mia Kragh (53.24), and Eloise Riley (50.13) teamed up to make it happen, shattering the pool record of 3:47.60.

Cal would also set a new pool record in the 200 free relay at the end of the session. Ella Mazurek (23.42), Riley (23.06), Emily Gantriis (22.98), and Emma Davidson (23.01) combined for a 1:32.47, taking over a second off the pool record.

Isabelle Stadden claimed victory in the 200 IM, swimming a 2:02.32. Her time marks a new pool record, as she held off teammates Leah Polonsky (2:02.50) and Ayla Spitz (2:02.86), both of whom also came in under the previous pool record. Stadden was out quick, splitting 26.77 on fly and 29.51 on back for a 56.28 on the first 100.

Cal’s other pool record came in the 200 fly, where Rachel Klinker swam a 1:58.81, narrowly beating out Polonsky (1:59.01) as well. Klinker held her pace very well, splitting 30.25, 30.37, and 30.77 on the final three 50s respectively.

UCSD broke a pair of pool records themselves, both of which came early in the meet. In the 1000 free, the first individual event, Juli Arzave swam a 10:08.32. She led a 1-2 punch by the Tritons, with Sophia Bell taking second in 10:14.97. Arzave came in well under the pool record, which stood at 10:11.34.

Then, UCSD’s Katja Pavicevic took the 100 breast in 1:02.14. She posted the fastest split in the field on both 50s of the race, swimming a 29.29 on the first 50 and 32.85 on the second. Her swim came in well under the previous pool record of 1:02.97.

Pavicevic made it a sweep of the breast events, clocking a 2:15.32 in the 200 breast. She just missed out on breaking the pool record in the 200 too, as that mark sits at 2:15.27.

Isabelle Stadden also picked up a win in the 200 free, swimming a 1:50.58.

Cal’s Emily Gantriis swept the sprint free events. Gantriis swam a 23.43 in the 50 free, touching just 0.06 seconds ahead of teammate Eloise Riley. Gantriis then went on to win the 100 free in 50.95, this time narrowly beating out Stadden, who touched second in 50.98.

Cal’s Ayla Spitz was a double event winner as well. Spitz first won the 100 back, swimming a 54.59. She then went on to swim a 4:52.97 in the 500 free, touching first by five seconds.
