A total of 283 swimmers from 44 countries earned money at the 2021 World Short Course Swimming Championships, with just over $3 million being handed out.
Tuesday finished with a bang, with a fourth World Record bonus being handed out. Germany’s Florian Wellbrock won the 1500 free in a new record-setting time of 14:06.88. That earned him a $50,000 bonus in addition to the $15,000 winner’s fee.
- Women’s 200 free relay – USA (1:34.22)
- Men’s 1500 free relay – Floridan Wellbrock, Germany (14:06.88 – World Record)
- Men’s 100 freestyle – Alessandro Miressi, Italy (45.57)
- Women’s 200 breaststroke – Emily Escobedo, USA (2:17.85)
- Men’s 200 backstroke – Radoslaw Kawecki, Poland (1:48.68)
- Women’s 100 butterfly – Maggie MacNeil, Canada (55.04)
- Men’s 50 breaststroke – Nic Fink, USA (25.53)
- Women’s 50 freestyle – Sarah Sjostrom, Sweden (23.08)
- Men’s 400 medley relay – Italy (3:19.76 – Championship Record)
- Women’s 400 medley relay – Sweden (3:46.20 – European Record)
Besides the German, among the other big earners on the day was American 17-year old Claire Curzan, who had a whopping four races in the final day of competition. She grabbed a bronze medal in the 100 fly, finished 6th in the 50 free, won a gold medal on the American 200 free relay, and was part of a 4th-place 400 medley relay.
While she began to show some signs of the long session in that final relay, where even on a rolling start she was two-tenths slower than her individual time, but the effort still earned her the rights to $21,000 on the day. That’s part of a $37,500 overall effort for Curzan at the meet, though there is still conflicting information over what the NCAA amateurism rules have to say about prize money.
Including the four World Record bonuses, FINA gave out $3,085,000 in prize money at the meet. That’s an increase from the $2,205,000 that was awarded in 2018 (which included 9 World Records, though only a $15,000 bonus for each there).
Note: these calculations are based on prize money earned. How much prize money each athlete accepts will vary depending on their individual situations.

They can put it in a trust. Know this from past experience of people who have done that.
The former NCAA rules wouldn’t allow that. Which, of course, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Lots of people have always violated the NCAA rules.
How do most nations handle costs for worlds events? E.g. – does USSwimming cover flights, hotels, and food for all national team members? Do other nations cover these costs for swimmers as well? Or are the swimmers on their own?
Parents sign up swimmers for worlds and pay for travel and acomodation.
It seems that you only break NCAA rules if you get paid by the college for competing. Also you can’t have a contract with someone or organization to compete for money.
Anyone know how much *approximately* will be taken out in taxes? I’m sure there’s something.
Above 200000hkd(25k usd) it’s taxed at %17, so about $500k in tax.
UAE has a personal tax rate of $0. They won’t owe taxes locally, but will (likely) still have to pay tax in the athlete’s respective country of domicile at whatever their tax bracket dictates. I’m not sure if this is taxed as prize money or as ordinary income which could matter. But generally speaking, an approach to taxing foreign earnings works like the following though each jurisdiction can have its own complexities that make an athletes circumstance vary. If Athlete A lives in country X with a tax rate of 20% and also earns $100 of income in country Y with a tax rate of 15% during the year, Athlete A will pay the 15% tax to country Y and… Read more »
Shaine Casas will definitely be able to pay his rent in Texas with this prize money and join the Longhorns next year.
Wild guess: Casas wins the 100 back at US Trials next year and then Kliment AK47 wins the WC Title.
ISL is shaking right now
Can high schoolers and college swimmers accept this money without any issues now?
I sure hope so
Different schools are giving their athletes different answers.
My guess is that it’s a situation where if they just take the money and don’t talk about it, nobody will do anything about it.
Braden,
Trying to stay up to date on NIL rules etc for these younger kids. What do you know about the difference between this payout money vs. what the Texas Longhorn Football Booster program is doing to pay linemen $50k? It seems the NIL rules are so vague that it is basically pandora’s box at this point? Claire should be paid for those swims beyond what the rule used to be, which I believe was that they could accept money up to covering their expenses for the trip. But if on a USA Swimming comp like this doesn’t USA Swim pick up the tab for all travel/logistics?
Pretty sure that’s what the rules w/ boosters were before, so at least that’s spreading around.
Bingo, finally we have clarity! great post
Braden: This is so irresponsible, I am seething. If, suddenly, one of these athletes is barred from NCAA competition, are you going to defend his/her decision to ignore the rules? If there is a disagreement among compliance officers, then the only CORRECT response is to get a DEFINITIVE RULING. If the NCAA declines to answer the question, then they won’t have a strong case to bar the athlete. Just because this is in the comments, and not in the article, does not make you immune from upholding your journalistic responsibilities. When you have your law degree, let me know.
Seething? Chill.
Bro. He IS holding up his journalistic responsibilities. He’s not telling them that they should do it, he’s observing that if they just take the money, they’ll probably get away with it.
Which is probably true, because foreign swimmers have been getting away with it for years.
Also, CTFO
Uhhh is it a journalist’s job to give compliance advice to student-athletes?
This is such a super strange post, especially that you’re “seething.”
BK’s job is to tell you what is. Anybody who’s been around college swimming for any period of time knows that he’s exactly right. Nobody did anything about Joseph Schooling’s million dollars + other endorsements before NIL, nobody did anything about the scores of pros from other countries who came here and somehow magically regained amateur status. Nobody’s going to do anything about this either.
