For the third consecutive swim Simonas Bilis set a new Lithuanian Record in the men’s 100 freestyle, but his swim tonight was more significant than that. Along with the record, Bilis won his first international gold medal in a time of 46.58.
Bilis first lowered the record in the prelims, clocking 47.39. He then went 46.73 for a new best in the semi-finals, and then lowered it again down to 46.58 for the final. Japan’s Shinri Shioura was hot on his tail, taking silver just 0.01 back in 46.59, and Tommaso D’Orsogna of Australia took 3rd in 46.70.
That is Bilis’ second medal of the meet, as he took bronze in the 50 free earlier, where also reset the Lithuanian Record multiple times. After an incredible career at NC State, Bilis continues to make a name for himself on the international scene, now with two World SC medals to go along with an Olympic final in Rio in the 50 free.
