ShAC’s Jenny Yu and NOVA’s Julia Gonik Verbally Commit to MIT

Pearland, Texas-native Jenny Yu and Irvine, California’s Julia Gonik have both committed to swim for Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the class of 2022.

Yu swims for head coach Gilbert Legaspi at Swim Houston Aquatics Center (ShAC), where she specializes mainly in back and free. A senior at Glenda Dawson High School, she is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American. Yu placed 10th in the 100 back (57.24) and 14th in the 50 free (24.17) at the 2017 UIL 6A Swimming and Diving State Meet. A month later she competed in the 50 free, 50/100/200 back, and 50/100 fly at the NCSA Spring Championship.

Yu’s 100/200 back, 50/100/200 free, and 100 fly times would all have scored in their respective A-finals at 2017 NEWMAC Championships, and her 100 back would have scored at 2017 NCAA Division III Championships.

Julia Gonik

Gonik swims for Northwood High School and Irvine Novaquatics. She is a breast/IM specialist and has qualified for the CIF-Southern Section Division I Championships in each of her three high school seasons so far. In 2016 she placed 6th in the 100 breast and 15th in the 200 IM; this past spring she came in 10th in the breast (1:04.86) and 12th in the IM (2:06.83). Gonik went best times in the LCM 100 breast and 200 IM at Santa Clara Futures this summer.

Gonik would have been an A-finalist in the 100/200 breast and 200/400 IM at the 2017 NEWMAC Championships.
