Andrew Seliskar, the number one recruit from the class of 2015 and future Cal Bear is signed up to swim the 100 butterfly and 200 IM at the upcoming Virginia 5A North West Region Championships. The North West Region Championships will start on Friday and will be his last high school meet before the Virginia 5A State Championships on Feb. 20th and 21st. Seliskar and the Jefferson boys’ team have their sights set on the state title. “We’ve been talking about states all year. Even ahead of Friday dual meets, Coach Ian [Handerhan] would be talking about how the meet was preparing us for the postseason.” said Seliskar to ReachForTheWall.com.
Although Seliskar typically swims breaststroke, he told his coach he is willing to swim wherever the team needs him. That race this year is the 100 butterfly. This weekend he is seeded second in the 100 butterfly at 50.27 to Ted Schubert from Patrick Henry at 49.03. His coach pointed out that this is the first time in Seliskar’s high school career that he is not the top seeded swimmer in his event.
Although he is the second seed in the 100 butterfly, he will still be the favorite to win both of his events. His best time in the 100 fly is within a second of the National High School record at 46.50. Caeleb Dressell currently holds the national public school record at 45.89, with the overall mark belonging to Joseph Schooling in 45.52. His best time in the 200 IM is a little further off David Nolan’s national record of 1:41.39. Seliskar’s best time is currently 1:43.32.

Trouble, you are correct. The schedule for 5A states is prelims on Saturday 2/21, 8AM-12PM, then finals will be 5-9PM that night. 6A will be on the same schedule but will swim on Friday.
In terms of his events, Andrew has the State Cut in every event, so his options are completely open come the State meet; however, TJ is seeded to advance 4 swimmers not named Andrew Seliskar to States in the 100BR. If they all qualify he probably wouldn’t swim that event since you can only enter a maximum of 4 swimmers in any one event.
One slight clarification: 5A will only be swimming on Saturday, 2/21, with prelims in the morning, and finals in the evening. 6A will be swimming the day before. At least, that’s my understanding. Last year they did prelims on Friday and finals on Saturday, with 5A swimming morning, and 6A swimming evening.

Hmm thanks, that’s very interesting. I swam I’m Florida in high school and whatever events you swam at districts, you had to swim at regionals and states. I would assume most states are like that but I like this system that Virginia has with cuts.
California sectional meets (no state meet in CA) is by qualifying time only.
I know that Dressel has the public hs record with a 45.89, but doesn’t schooling have the private hs and overall hs record with a 45.52?
You can only swim two individual events at high school meets. The VHSL does allow swimmers to enter individual events at states on the basis of qualifying times, so assuming he’s made other cuts in the season (which I’m assuming he has), Seliskar will not necessarily swim the 200 IM and the 100 fly at states, although he may very well.

Can he enter additional events at state champs if he only swims 2 events at regionals?
High school rules allow a max of four events. Swimmers may swim 2 individual events and 2 relays or 1 individual event and 3 relays.
