Scottsdale Aquatic Club’s first verbal commit of the class of 2016 came from Grace LaPorte, who chose to spend the next four years at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. LaPorte is a distance freestyler at Pinnacle High School. At the 2014 Arizona State Swimming & Diving Championships, she scored seventh in the 200 free and tenth in the 500. She also swam on Pinnacle’s 200 free relay, which finished third in the state.
LaPorte’s strongest performances have been in the freestyle gamut, but she also has a strong 200 fly. Her best short course times are:
- 1650 free – 17:25.38
- 1000 free – 10:26.04
- 500 free – 5:05.25
- 200 free – 1:53.24
- 100 free – 53.15
- 200 fly – 2:10.83
New Mexico State scored well in distance freestyle events at 2015 Western Athletic Conference Championships, but with their top performers (Emily Nightingale and Kenzie Soper) graduating after this season, the Aggies will count on LaPorte to help them reload the distance group. Already, LaPorte’s best 1650 time would have come in 11th at WACs and her 500 would have been right on the B/C-final bubble. She also would have made the “C” final in the 200 fly and 200 free.
