While these European Championships are not the ultimate stop for versatile British star Duncan Scott, some were a little concerned to see the 24-year-old scratch not only his individual 100m freestyle entry this morning, but also be left off the mixed 800m free relay tonight.
Scott had already gotten wet here at Duna Arena in Budapest, throwing down a massive anchor of 47.19 on his nation’s men’s 4x100m freestyle relay to help clock a new national record en route to silver. As such, his racing the 100m free was highly anticipated against the backdrop of the likes of Italy’s on-fire Alessandro Miressi and Russia’s Kliment Kolesnikov. His 200m free was also one to watch as a potential member of the 800m free relay tonight.
Scott’s University of Stirling coach Steven Tigg, however, put minds at ease, telling SwimSwam simply, “All is good.”
Tigg said Scott’s having the day off was merely a result of a ‘congested schedule’ and his swims could have potentially prevented a teammate from moving on to the next round, given the 2-per-country rule for advancing.
In the 100m free, teammate Tom Dean snagged the 8th spot with a semi-final swim of 48.39 while Matt Richards finished in 15th in 49.01.
Scott has the 200m IM tomorrow and also the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay.
Maybe I’m just snarky today, but I’m skeptical of this explanation
Why? He’s clearly the fastest GB sprinter and he’s giving someone else’s the chance to make a final and compete at a major international championship. He has his eyes on Tokyo, that’s what it counts.
Good to know, and thanks to Swimswam and Retta for getting the info so quickly. You’re the best 🙂
Thank you.
