Swim coach Scott Volkers, who was accused of sexual abuse by three former female swimmers in Australia, will take part in the Brazilian national team’s pre-Olympic camp, though he will not be coaching on deck at the Olympics themselves.
Volkers was a well-known coach in Australia with a lengthy resume of Olympic-level swimmers. But after he was charged indecent dealing with three girls under the age of 16, Volkers was banned from working with children under the age of 16 in Australia. Though authorities eventually dropped the charges, Volkers left the country for Brazil, where he is now the head coach at the Minas Tennis Club, which put 8 swimmer on the Brazilian Olympic team this year.
But the Australian Olympic Committee asked Brazil not to put Volkers on its list of accredited coaches for the Olympic team, which would effectively bar him from being on deck at the Olympics. That’s reminiscent of the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships held in Australia, in which the host nation said it would deny Volkers accreditation if he were part of the Brazilian staff going to the meet.
Brazil announced its coaching staff this week, and Volkers was not a part of the team.
But Fox Sports Australia reports that Volkers will be part of the Brazilian Olympic team’s pre-Olympic training champ in Sao Paolo later this month. He will also travel to Rio de Janeiro for the Olympics, though he won’t be allowed on the pool deck or in the athlete village.
Up until the athletes move into the athlete village, Volkers will train Henrique Martins and Italo Manzine, the two athletes on the team he trains most closely at Minas, according to a spokesperson for the Brazilian swimming federation.
Isn’t it innocent until proven guilty? I know there’s enormous sensitivity towards child molestation and sexual assault, but we are already condemning someone without evidence ..
I know that Alex Pussieldi is on his side @ricardotn81 Inocente na Austrália e querem culpá-lo no Brasil? Não existe nenhuma pendência criminal com ele.
Why
Because there has been no conviction in a court of law . This still stands for something . At any time Qld state Prosecutors could re open the case if they had further evidence but as yet -they have not .
Didn’t know where else to post but Bruno Fratus just threw down a solid 50 free in practice on Brett Hawke’s ig.
And…?
Didn’t you leave out the most important part of your news?
LOL – that makes us all wonder about the time ….
21,8 on training he will go for a 21.2 21,3 in Rio probably
