On the heels of the 2024 European Championships and Sette Colli Trophy, the Scottish National Open Swimming Championships kicked off from Edinburgh.
With the Paris Olympic Games beginning just a month from now, British Olympians are among those taking to the Royal Commonwealth pool for final tune-ups ahead of their staging camp.
Olympic multi-medalist Duncan Scott dove in for the men’s 200m IM and put up a solid time for the victory.
27-year-old Scott stopped the clock at 1:57.95 as the sole competitor to get under the 2:00 barrier.
He led an onslaught of Stirling swimmers who captured the 7 of 8 slots in the final. Behind Scott was teammate Evan Jones who touched in 2:00.03 while George Smith rounded out the podium in 2:00.77.
Scott owns a season-best of 1:55.91 from when he topped the Aquatics GB Olympic Trials podium. That result is within range of the British record of 1:55.28 he posted at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
With just one event in between, Scott was back in the water to contest the men’s 100m free final.
Scott powered his way to a mark of 48.88 to earn the victory, splitting 23.94/24.94 in the process.
That was enough to hold off David Cumberlidge of Edinburgh who produced a silver medal-worthy 49.05 while Jack McMillan touched in 49.45 for bronze.
McMillan was selected for the British Olympic roster as a discretionary pick by the nation’s coaching brain trust after finishing 5th in the 200m free (1:46.19) at Trials.
Stirling teammate Angharad Evans posted another head-turning performance en route to winning the women’s 100m breaststroke.
21-year-old Evans scorched a time of 1:05.71 to fall just .17 shy of the British national record of 1:05.54 she registered at last month’s AP Race London.
Edinburgh duo Kara Hanlon and Anna Morgan were next in line, with the former hitting 1:06.83 to the latter’s 1:09.18.
Evans opened in 31.36 and closed in 34.35 to turn in just the 3rd sub-1:06 swim of her on-the-rise career.

As we’ve reported, Evans has been improving rapidly every time she dives in. Her lifetime best from just last year rested at 1:08.05 so the Paris Olympic qualifier has dropped well over 2 seconds from then until now.

- Lucy Hope, who qualified for Paris in the women’s 4x200m free relay, snagged gold here in the 100m free. 27-year-old Hope notched a mark of 54.90 to clear the field by well over a second. Evelyn Davis scored silver in 56.20, about half a second off her best, and Katie Goodburn bagged bronze in 57.81.
- Scott Gibson of Edinburgh logged 25.36 as the men’s 50m backstroke victor. That gave the 24-year-old a healthy advantage over runner-up Jamie Ferguson (25.68) and 3rd-place finisher Jamie Robertson (25.98).
- Stirling’s Michaella Glenister posted a time of 8:46.68 as the quickest women’s 800m freestyler. Her outing represented the only performance of the field under 9:00. Her PB checks in at 8:42.26 from last year’s British Championships.
Can’t wait to see how Evans responds to taper.
That 54.9 makes Hope the 4th fastest British woman this year. Really interested what GB will do for the 4×1 – Will they go for the faster PB/SB of Hope or stick on Colbert who came 4th and beat her at trials?

Great seeing Scott swimming so well again, right up there with his best in season times. Very impresssive to go a 48.8 about 20 mins after a 1:57 2IM too.
Side note: If Dunks wins 4 or more medals in Paris (definitely possible) he’ll have the most Olympic medals of any British athlete ever, current record is 9 by Cyclist Jason Kenny and Dunks currently has 6.
When is Scott dropping the 100free
He’s not swam it internationally since 2017 at World level.
