School Record Highlights On Day One of Hoosierland Invite

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana men’s and women’s swimming teams got off to a great start at the Hoosierland Invitational on Thursday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington.

Preliminary races on Thursday were long course meter events, while the finals were conducted in short course yards.

In the first final of the night, the IU team of Kaitlin Kitchens, Gabriela Rajic, Ali Rockett and Grace Vertigans won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:30.84. The mark ranks the relay team sixth all-time in school history.

On the men’s side, the team of Ali Khalafalla, Tanner Kurz, Oliver Patrouch and Sam Lorentz won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:19.29.

In the 500 freestyle “A” final, Indiana’s Haley Lips touched first in a team-best time of 4:39.24, while Stephanie Marchuk placed second with a season-best mark of 4:44.96. Both times are NCAA B qualifying times.

For the men, Max Irwin edged teammate Jackson Miller with a career-best time of 4:17.19 in the “A” final. Miller placed second with a season-best mark of 4:18.46, while Grayson Smith was third in 4:23.04. Irwin, Jackson and Smith, along with Adam Destrampe (4:24.21) and Andrej Ivanovic (4:24.85) all earned NCAA B cut qualifying marks. In the “B” final, Indiana’s Joey Snodderly won with a career-best time of 4:29.10.

In the 200 IM “A” final, the Hoosiers had an impressive five swimmers earn NCAA B cut times, sweeping the top-7 of the eight swimmer final. Gia Dalesandro won with a season-best time of 1:58.98, while Bailey Pressey was second with a season-best mark of 1:59.15.

Reagan Cook was third with a career-best of 2:00.91 that ranks her 15^th all-time in school history, while Sam Lisy was fourth with a season-best mark of 2:01.08. Rachel Matsumura was fifth with a career-best time of 2:01.12 that ranks her in a tie for 19^th all-time in school history.

For the men in the 200 IM “A” final, Tanner Kurz touched first in a NCAA B cut time of 1:46.83. In the “B” final, Cody Taylor placed second with a season-best NCAA B cut time of 1:48.92. Swimming unattached, Ian Finnerty won the “B” final with a NCAA B cut mark of 1:48.85.

In the 50 freestyle “A” final, Kaitlin Kitchens led the Hoosiers, placing second with a career-best time of 23.06. Grace Vertigans came in third with a season-best time of 23.08. In the “B” final, Marie Chamberlain touched first with a career-best time of 23.40.

In the men’s 50 freestyle “A” final, Ali Khalafalla won with a season-best and NCAA B cut time of 19.58. Sam Lorentz placed third with a season-best mark time of 20.19, earning a NCAA B qualifying mark as well.

The Indiana team of Marie Chamberlain, Bailey Pressey, Gia Dalesandro and Haley Lips won the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:38.10. Chamberlain’s leadoff 100 backstroke time of 51.87 is a NCAA B cut time.

IU saved the best for last on Thursday, as the Hoosier team of Bob Glover, Tanner Kurz, Max Irwin and Ali Khalafalla set the Indiana school record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:07.13 The great mark was also an NCAA qualifying time. Bob Glover’s 100 back leadoff leg of 46.04 was a NCAA B cut time.

In the LCM prelims of the Hoosierland Invitational, Indiana had five swimmers record Olympic Trials qualifying marks – Stephanie Marchuck (4:17.95, 400 LC free), Jackson Miller (3:53.59, 400 LC free), Bailey Pressey (2:17.09, 200 LC IM), Grace Vertigans (26.17, 50 LC free) and Ali Khalafalla (22.67, 50 LC free).

Ali Khlafalla’s time of 22.67 in the 50 LC freestyle is an Indiana record and leaves the Egyptian native just 0.42 second off the Egyptian national senior record.

Jackson Miller’s time of 3:53.59 is a personal-best by two second and ranks him fourth all-time at IU. Max Irwin swam a 3:59.31 in the prelims to rank fifth all-time in the 400 LC freestyle. Bailey Pressey’s impressive time in the 200 LC IM ranks fifth in school history.

The Hoosierland Invitational will continue on Friday in Bloomington with prelims at 11 a.m. ET and finals at 6 p.m. ET.
