On night two of the 2017 Stockholm Open, Sarah Sjöström erupted for a world-leading 56.26 in the 100m fly. Sjöström’s previous season best was a 57.12 from back in January, which had ranked her 2nd in the world. With her time tonight, she sails past young Japanese sprinter Rikako Ikee to claim the world’s #1 time.

Sjöström decimated the field, with no swimmer coming within two seconds of her. She was out in 26.46, then absolutely tore for home, splitting a 29.79 on the way back. No other swimmer split under 31 on the 2nd 50.
2nd went to Denmark’s Emilie Beckmann, taking a tenth off of her season best for a time of 58.58.
Sjöström now leads the world rankings in both the 50m and 100m fly. Her 24.96 in the 50 fly from last night is the world’s #1 time by a considerable margin– no other woman has been under 25.7 yet this year. She’s the world record holder in both races, and is the reigning Olympic champion in the 100 fly.
The top seed in both the 50 and 100 free, Sjöström will stick with sprint free for the remainder of the Stockholm Open.
Great swim, but almost half a second slower then last year.
She has won the 100m fly 3 times at World Champs (09, 13, 15)
As far as I know there have only been 3 other swimmers then Sarah faster then 56.28 and two of those were done in 2009 with high tech suits and the 3rd is Dana Vollmer. I do not have access to all of her times, but this is something like her 15th best time or something close to that.
Katinka Hosszu indeed swims everything at this meet being today the first at 400IM (4:40 though), the second at 100 back, the fourth at 100 fly and the thirty something at 50 breaststroke.
I’m wondering if her husband contributes somehow financially to the family budget or we have a classic case when the man says what to do and woman is the one who actually works 🙂
The most interesting (at least to me) will be the day after tomorrow when Sarah Sjostrom races at 100 free. After today’s Australian sprint hurricane it would be interesting to see what Sarah has to say in response. She was very close to her best at 50 free that is one of the best of all time. Her personal best at 100 free is 52.67. I really expect her to be under 53sec next Tuesday.
