Day four of the Portuguese Championships featured the finals of the 100 butterfly, 200 breaststoke, 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 400 freestyle, and 4x50m medley relay.
Swedish swimmers Louise Hansson and Stina Gardell finished first and second in the women’s 100 butterfly at 1:00.31 and 1:00.90, respectively. Nuno Goncalo Quintanilha won the men’s 100 butterfly with his time of 54.17. He was followed by Miguel Duarte Nascimento at 54.73.
The top two women’s 200 breaststrokers finished with unique times to earn gold and silver. Joline Höstman and Layla Black both finished at 2:30.00 and 2:31.00.
Sweden’s Erik Persson won the men’s 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:14.98. His national teammate, Simon Sjödin, finished second at 2:15.41. Nuno Goncalo Quintanilha finished third after winning the 100 butterfly with his time of 2:18.23.
Sarah Sjostrom ran away with the women’s 50 freestyle, winning by more than a second with her time of 24.55. Sjostrom held the fastest time in the world in this event (23.98) up until earlier today when she was supplanted by Commonwealth Games champ Fran Halsall (23.96). On the men’s side, Alexandre Escudier Agostinho posted a 23.14 to win the men’s 50 freestyle.
Ida Lingborg finished two seconds ahead of the rest of the field to win the women’s 100 backstroke with her time of 1:01.44.
A 56.66 from Mattias Carlsson was enough to win the men’s 100 backstroke. He touched out Pedro Oliveira for second with his time of 56.84.
Chloe Finch led a 1-2-3-4 attack from Great Britain. She posted the fastest time of the final with her time of 4:17.71. The final individual event of the day was won by Great Britain’s Thomas Howley with his time of 3:56.68.

Layla Black in the 200m Breaststroke is only 13 years old. Another fast Improving young British breaststroker. The women are slowly catching the men in British breaststroke – While she had a poor 200m, Sophie Taylor is coming at only 18 (British record in the 50m in Glasgow), Molly Renshaw 200m bronze another 18 year old, 14 year olds Emma Cain & Abbie Wood both 2.29 at Euro Juniors for 3rd & 4th, 13yo Layla Black 2.31 – Hopefully they can push on like the lads have.
My guess is that we’ll see another 23.7 by Rio and Steffen’s 100m mark will be gone by then
A mistake there, Sarah Sjoestrom does not have the fastest 50 free time in the world, Fran Halsall does.
