Students at San Jose State University are mourning the loss of one of their own after club water polo player, Ryan Harryman, 24, died from injuries sustained during his team’s water polo practice at the university’s aquatic center. Harryman was not a member of SJSU’s varsity squad.
A university spokeswoman said that last Tuesday Harryman was underwater for a minute before his teammates noticed him at the bottom of the pool and then pulled him out. The team was swimming laps when they noticed Harryman was unconscious underwater. He was given CPR and was rushed to the hospital. He was put on life support at the hospital with “severe brain damage.” Over the weekend, he was pulled off life support and passed away shortly after.
The university spokesperson said there’s no evidence to suggest he fell and hit his head on the pool deck or on the bottom when he dove in. At this time, it unclear if any health related issues played a role, as details have not yet been released.
The San Jose State Men’s Water Polo Club posted this testimonial to their late teammate on Facebook: “Rest in peace to our teammate, friend, and brother Ryan Harryman. He never missed a practice and was undoubtedly one of the most dedicated members of our team. More importantly, he brought a constant positive attitude and made us smile at every opportunity.”
Harryman was scheduled to graduate in may with a degree in anthropology.
