Despite a rocky start to the meet, Cal’s Ryan Murphy successfully completed the 4-peat, winning the 100 back with the 3rd fastest performance of all time in 43.99. That was about a half second off his NCAA Record of 43.49 from last season’s NCAA meet. Murphy now owns 6 of the 10 fastest performances in history.
Tonight’s 100 back was blazing fast, as we saw 2 other men improve on their times for the top 10 all-time list. Texas’ John Shebat improved on his best time with a 44.35, moving to 3rd on the all-time performers list ahead of Olympic champion backstroker Matt Grevers. Alabama’s Connor Oslin remains at 5th on the all-time top performers list, but lowered his time down to a 44.56.

So Murphy isn’t quite at his best. Very understandable. I feel like out of all the Olympians swimming at this meet Murphy went the hardest last year (obviously not saying the others didn’t work hard, they certainly did). I mean he was all in, and that isn’t something you can maintain. A bit of a drop off is expected, though I bet he’ll continue to improve in a more general sense. Hard to believe I can call a 43.9 a drop off, but by Murphy standards it is.
On a sort-of-but-not-really-related note, what’s the most impressive record in the NCAA? Both of Murphy’s backstrokes have got to be right up there just because nobody EVER has even been all… Read more »
His 1:35.7 200 back is in the stratosphere with Biedermann’s freestyle WR’s. No one has been within 2.5s of it.
Shebat 44.35?! He has really come a long way during his time at Texas.
I just realized Conger went 44.35 in fly. Someone should try and put together a video of their races side by side.
So many 44s
