Ryan Murphy became the first man to qualify for the US Olympic team in both the 100 and 200 backstroke for 3 straight Olympics last night, winning the 200 back at the US Trials. Afterward, Murphy spoke to the media about Cal’s infamous backstroke training group and how iron sharpens iron in the waters of Berkeley.
I’ve been wondering whether Lasco scratched the 2 back in part because he sensed from practice that he couldn’t beat Jones or Murphy.
Has to be the case. It’s the most logical explanation.
He sees every day how much Keaton is progressing and had to know his chances of beating him were slim (or at least worse than his chances of getting top 6 in the 100 free) and took a calculated risk that scratching the 200back would preserve his legs for the 100 free final.
