Russia, Italy Maintain Lead in Women’s European Water Polo Prelims

Russia, Italy and the Netherlands dominated their respective games on Tuesday February 12 when the women’s Water Polo World League Game Day 9 was played in Ruza (RUS), Mulhouse (FRA) and Budapest (HUN).

Group A’s Russia beat the Israeli team 28-5, scoring six goals in the first two and last quarters of the game (6-2, 6-2, 1-0, 6-1). Russia has won all its matches since the beginning of the European qualification phase and has accumulated 17 points.

Group B’s Hungary was defeated 10-11 at home by the Dutch thanks to a powerful first quarter for the visiting team (3-6, 2-3, 2-1, 3-1).

Group B’s leaders Italy also won 14-8 against their French opponents despite two tied quarters in the middle of the game (3-1, 3-3, 2-2, 6-2). Italy maintains its leading position of the group with 15 points and five out of five wins.

GROUP A: 1. Russia 17pts; Spain 10pts; Greece 6pts; Israel 0
GROUP B: 1. Italy 15pts; Hungary 8pts; Netherlands 7pts; France 0

The last women’s Game Day will be on March 5, SCHEDULE available here, while the Europa Cup Final will be played from March 29-31 in Turin (ITA).

The Men’s World League European preliminaries resumes on February 19 .
