Roger Williams University Claim Victory at Commonwealth Coast Conference Invite

The Roger Williams University Swim Team opened the season with a victory at the Commonwealth Coast Conference Invitational hosted at RWU. The men’s team outpaced Gordon College the University of New England outscoring them 235, 126, to 67. The women’s team was equally impressive in their debut grabbing 279 points with Gordon finishing a distant second with 73 while the UNE and Western New England picking up 58 and 38 points respectively.

The Hawks opened the event by setting a new meet record in the women’s 200 yard medley relay. The team on Hannah Nolte (Elmhurst, Ill.), Hailey Martel (Harwinton, Conn.), Andrea Almandoz (Sudbury, Mass.), and Katherine Johnson (Weston, Conn.) bested the previous time of 1:56.89 by more than 2 seonds to record a time of 1:54.05. Gordon’s India Boland crushed the 200 yard freestyle by more than 5 seconds posting a 1:58.43 and set a new mark in the 500 yard freestyle eclipsing the previous time by almost 10 seconds. The Hawks 200 yard freestyle relay team of Nolte, Johnson, Margaret Pegno (Manhasset, N.Y.), and Stephanie Niman (Bristol, Conn.) shaved 1 second off the the meet record in the 15th event of the day. Nolte grabbed her third meet record of the day by taking the 100 yard fresstyle in 1:02.11. Martel followed up by picking up the 100 yard Breaststroke record in 1:12:07.

The men’s meet saw the 200 yard freestyle record fall with Gordon’s Daniel Fauber posting at 1:50.01.

The Hawks return to the pool deck on October 25 to take on the Owls of Keene State in Bristol, R.I. at 1:00 p.m.
