Rian Covington, a Jacksonville, Florida native, has announced his verbal commitment to join the Florida State Seminoles as a member of their class of 2021. Covington attends Atlantic East High School as well as swimming for the Bolles School Sharks.
Covington specializes in sprint free and fly. Last summer he competed at the USA Swimming Futures-Greensboro where he was a finalist in the 50 free, finishing 16th in a time of 24.33. He competed at the FHSAA (Florida High School) 4A State Championships last fall where he finished 4th in the 50 free (20.72) and 12th in the 100 fly (50.91).

At last year’s ACC Championships Florida State finished 5th out of 12 teams. Last year’s sprint group was led by Kanoa Kaleoaloha and William Pisani, both of whom were seniors. Kaleoaloha was the conference champion in the 100 free and 100 fly while Pisani won the 50 free. It took a 20.01/43.76 to qualify for C-finals in the 50 and 100 free last year as well as a 47.14 in the 100 fly.
Covington will have two years of overlap with Peter Varjasi once he joins the team in 2021. A current freshman, Varjasi currently ranks in the top 20 nationally in both the 50 and 100 free.
