Reigning NCAA Champ Olivia Carter Wins 3rd B1G 200 Fly Title in New Meet Record

2022 B1G WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS

200 BUTTERFLY

  • B1G Meet: 1:52.17 2/26/2021 Olivia Carter
  • 1:53.20 NCAA A Cut
  • 1:59.23 NCAA B Cut
  1. Olivia Carter (Michigan), 1:51.83
  2. Megan Van Berkom (Minnesota), 1:53.89
  3. Katherine Trace (OSU), 1:55.12

Michigan senior Olivia Carter took home her 3rd consecutive Big Ten title in the 200 fly tonight in Madison, pulling away from the field on the back half of the race. Carter downed her own Big Ten Championships meet record with the 1:51.83 tonight. The previous record was 1:52.17, which she set at last year’s championships.

Carter is now the only swimmer in Big Ten Championships history to swim under 1:53 in the 200 fly, and now she’s gone under 1:52 as well. Here are Carter’s Big Ten winning times from each of her 3 seasons with the Wolverines:

  • 2020 – 1:53.28
  • 2021 – 1:52.17
  • 2022 – 1:51.83

As shown above, Carter has steadily improved year over year at this meet.

Although the swim was a new Big Ten meet record, it wasn’t a season best for Carter. Her best time this year came in December, where she clocked a 1:51.62. That time ranks her #2 in the NCAA this season. The swim was, however, Carter’s 3rd fastest time of her career, behind only her 1:51.62 season best, and her personal best of 1:51.33, which she swam at last year’s NCAAs.

Here is a split comparison between Carter’s 200 fly performances at the last 3 Big Ten Champs, as well as her season best time and personal best time:

Splits 2022 Big Ten Champs 2021 Big Ten Champs 2020 Big Ten Champs 2021 Minnesota Invite 2021 NCAA Champs
1st 50 25.68 25.13 25.53 25.61 25.13
2nd 50 28.57 28.56 28.80 28.26 28.47
3rd 50 28.58 29.02 29.23 28.27 28.35
4th 50 29.00 29.46 29.72 29.48 29.38
Final Time 1:51.83 1:52.17 1:53.28 1:51.62 1:51.33

As the splits show, Carter has made the majority of her improvement on the middle 100 during her time with Michigan. Her race tonight was also the fastest she’s ever split on the final 50 of a 200 fly.
