USC junior Reed Malone says that after two-straight years of finishing as the Pac-12 500 freestyler runner-up to his now-graduated teammate Cristian Quintero, he’s happy to get the monkey off of his back.
Malone came away with his first career individual conference champion on Thursday evening in Federal Way, swimming a 4:11.80 for a dominating victory – two seconds ahead of Stanford sophomore Liam Egan (4:13.80).
Last year, Malone came up just .05 seconds shy of Quintero’s winning time, and the year before in 2014 as a freshman was .10 seconds behind Quintero. Even though his time was half-a-second slower than his runner-up finish from last season, it was good enough for gold.
On Friday morning, Malone swam a 1:33.55 that makes him the top qualifier into finals of the men’s 200 free.
