Records Keep Falling At the Scottish National Championships

In the first two days of the Scottish Gas National Short Course Championships in Edinburgh there have been two British, nine Scottish, three Scottish Junior and two Welsh records broken.

On the first day of competition the University of Stirling men’s and women’s relays both came away with Scottish national marks. The women’s team made up of Eloise Barber, Kerry Buchan, Sian Harkin and Lauren Averell won the event in a new Scottish record of 1:51.50. The men’s team made up of Ryan Bennett, Ross Murdoch, Cameraon Brodie and Jak Scott took the gold in a new Scottish record time of 1:37.88.

Murdoch also broke the Scottish record earlier in the evening finishing second in the men’s 50 breaststroke in a time of 27.06.

The final Scottish record of the evening went to Charlotte McKenzie who beat her own record posting a time of 26.45.

Adam Barrett set a new British record while Lizzie Simmonds took home a share of one. Barrett broke the 100 butterfly winning the event in a time of 50.05. Simmonds equaled the British record in the 50 backstroke taking the event in a time of 26.45.

Suleman Butt set a new Scottish junior record in the men’s 200 backstroke putting up a time of 2:00.55 while Duncan Scott put two new records up the first in the men’s 400 freestyle hitting the wall in a time of 3:53.57 and the second in the 50 freestyle where he finished in a time of 22.85.

Tom Laxton set the lone Welsh record posting a time of 51.36 in the men’s 100 butterfly.

On the second day of competition Laxton followed up his 100 butterfly Welsh record by setting a new mark in the 200 butterfly as well winning the event in a time of 1:54.39.

The University of Edinburgh went one, two, three in the women’s 50 breaststroke with Kathryn Johnstone standing on the top position of the podium putting up a winning time of 30.76, which broke her own national record.

Lucy Hope set the other individual Scottish record of the event posting a time of 2:08.92 in the 200 backstroke.

The other Scottish records were set in the relays.

The University of Stirling women followed up their 4 x 50 medley record by taking down the 4 x 50 freestyle record. The team made up of Kerry Buchan, Sian Harkin, Lauren Averell and Eloise Barber posted a new Scottish record time of 1:42.28.

The City of Glasgow Swim Team relay consisting of Jamie Graham, Dan Scott, Robbie Renwick and Alsdair Stirling won the men’s 4 x 50 freestyle relay in a Scottish record time of 1:29.37.

In the mixed 4 x 50 freestyle relays both the Scottish senior and junior marks were rewritten. Scotland 2 made up of Richard Schafers, Lucy Hope, Lauren Averell and Mark Szaranek set the senior record finishing in a time of 1:35.36 while Scotland J1 consisting of Ruairi Kirkwood, Katie Stark, Rebecca Murray and Duncan Scott set a new junior mark posting a time of 1:38.00.
